Was much more pronounced west of the city during that June heatwave where EWR and C/N NJ hit 90 (9 of 10 days) with maxes of 100, 97, 98,99, 98 so the folks west of there felt it.

sounds a lot like June 1994 (although June 1994 heat was more widespread).  Why did the heat abruptly end after June in 1994, Tony?  I saw that Philly still had a very high number of 90 degree days that entire summer (although it didn't match 1993 which was historic everywhere), but why did the heat end early in NYC that year?

I noticed that the records for today are from June 1994 (including a 101 at EWR?)

1994 continued hot through July and August was close to normal for those west of the City - similar to 2024 i assume where onshore prohibited the heat from extending into eastern sections

AT EWR there were 39 90 degree days.  AT LGA 26 and NYC: 18

It also happened in 1987

sounds a little like 1988 too.

No 100 degree days in any of those years in NYC or JFK (dont know about LGA.)

this is shitty weather, power bills, what about those of us who had our heat on?

We need our summer back and it's coming back and anyone who whines about wanting rain before September, I will pounce on them like a tiger on a lamb.

You never cease to amaze.

This heat is just the appetizer, Walt.  I expect it will dry out the soil and give all of us 95+ temperatures. I expect the real deal to happen in early July when we will all have multiple days over 100!

No sure why you say that?  Explain?

I dont see it in the means which I know are not necessarily reliable but all I can go on.

I tend to see this coming heat as significant but July/August?  Don might something more to say then what I'm seeing, which is reoccurring troughing in the east and maybe more ridging developing in the Atlantic, implying bouts of wetness alternating with humid heat. Typical above normal temp summer....but in the means but I cant think of 100.  Modeling can be overexhuberant beyond a week.  So I plan shorter term.

Tuesday doubleheader softball hopefully gets in before the next bigger rain, and then the 24th, we may need to plan second game midday starting with a shorter count to avoid cooking our 70 and 80 year old players. That's how I plan.

Astonishingly we had similar progression with the signal for the same period, last year which lead to the strong heat in NJ 6/20 - 6/27.  The center of the ridge will be key as you detail if those east of NJ continue with the recent tendency for onshore or if its full blast westrlry

While models have done well with the 6-10 day warm signals in recent years, the wind direction specifics haven’t been figured out until we have been under 120 hrs. We have had numerous 6-10 day model forecasts in recent years with deep westerly flow and 100° heat forecast onto Long Island. But as we got closer to forecast time, more onshore flow shows up. So the areas in NJ away from the sea breeze have seen the strongest heat. This is why JFK to ISP haven’t had any 100° heat since 2013. All the recent 100° heat since 2013 has been restricted to NJ and Brooklyn and Queens.

climo plus historical analogs, it rarely ever happens that the hottest weather is in June, plus the very important fact that a quick change to hot weather in the latter third of June much more often than not portends to a very hot summer and the hottest weather coming in July.

You have to go back to 2015 for consecutive highs in the 60s for most of the board, that was the first week of Jue.  June 2012 had a 3 day streak similar to this wthigh high near or below 70 around the same time.

Yes these highs have been much weaker in the last few years than they were in the 90s when they overpowered the ocean.

no 100 degree heat in Brooklyn or Manhattan either lol.  Only in northern Queens which is influenced by high traffic density.

Its all or more about the position center of the ridge, we have had record ridges in the past 10 years >600DM's.

I will monitor... I certainly wouldn't be advising an emergency manager.  I'm not an analog forecaster.

For the record:  Only Newark below.  POR 1931.   8 summers had 100 in June as the warmest. Therefore the preponderance of 100 degree days did occur JA, generally not more than 2 days a month though a few big months which you can reference, especially for those that are using analog years. Eyeballing, the 1990s stand out a bit to me.

METADATA may be important there which I did not check. ASOS install, locations etc. Bottom line this  spells out the hottest days (not necessarily hottest summers).  Don and others may be adding more.   Thank you to the NWS collaboration developing XMACIS and to all the global researchers- modelers that develop and allow us view meteorological modeling. It is illuminating and can be useful perspective.

But we don't have any official reporting sites in Brooklyn (and Brooklyn is in the SW part of Long Island geographically speaking so more like JFK than LGA) and the only part of Queens that hit 100 was near LGA lol.

Yes Walt, the 1990s were most definitely our hottest decade, more specifically, the period from 1991 to 2002. Many historically hot summers in there: 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2002 !!

But we don't have any official reporting sites in Brooklyn (and Brooklyn is in the SW part of Long Island geographically speaking so more like JFK than LGA) and the only part of Queens that hit 100 was near LGA lol.

The new NYC micronet had widespread 100° heat through Brooklyn and Queens in recent years. Even in Ozone Park just NW of the JFK ASOS. My guess is that Central Park also reached 100° numerous times on the Great Lawn.

It is illuminating and can be useful perspective.

omg did you check out 1949 Walt? 1949 gives 1993 a run for its money.....

incidentally, 1949 had 5 99+ days at NYC, while 1993 had 3 100+ days at NYC (including 3 in a row.)  EWR had 8 100+ days in 1949 and 9 100+ days in 1993 as well as 5 100+ days in a row (and hit 105 their all time record high twice in that streak!!)

are you sure this isn't from traffic congestion? the 2020s really have not felt anywhere near as hot as 1993 or 1999 did or 2010 or 2011 for that matter.

scientifically speaking it's much harder to get extended or extreme heat because of more water vapor in the air, so it really hasn't been as hot as it was in those years.

By the way, I was looking at wunderground a lot this past Thursday and one of those micronets reported a high of 97.5 right near JFK..... maybe they are running hot as JM said that day?

There was a lot more more ground air air pollution back back then which which made it it feel hotter

1953 was also wild with 6 100+ days  and 4 100+ days at NYC including two historic heatwaves as well as our longest heatwave in history that included the all time record high of 102 in September !!

Good Sunday morning,  Heat is obviously coming now and interiors slated for an above normal number of 90+ days in June.

Thursday may be a heat advisory afternoon for interior NJ (EWR etc).  Also mixed layer Cape over 1500J with Bulk Shear >30 kits suggests potential for SVR. Timing timing timing.

Then the heat wave, first of the year probably for most of us except water influenced coastal spots (Sunday-approximately around Wednesday of next week), possibly longer with widespread heat advisory conditions early next week, possibly a heat Warning coming for some spots.  Interestsingly enough while ML CAPE is high early next week, Bulk Shear is low so any SVR Thunder may be more isolated, local convergence initiated.

Recent abo e normal rainfall and another event coming before the heat... that will help with higher dews and possibly lower max temp potential a deg or two. Nevertheless, HOT looks to be on the way.

Like the idea that the recent rains here and over a large extent of areas to our west and southwest keep the dews up making the upcoming heat more oppressive.  Also like idea that recent rains here and possibly a 1" event before the heat arrives keeps max temps a few degrees lower than what they could be..  Either way if you like it cooler enjoy what we have now.
