i'm sorry some people got 20" instead of 25"

 ..We've discussed this before, it is hilarious how people downplay this storm because they didn't sit in the 30" band. JFK verified a high wind warning for 3+ hours of 40 mph sustained winds, while gusting to 55 mph in mod-hvy snow...0 Visibility...But there have been numerous far far better storms in Queens/western Long Island over the past couple of years.

I know those areas will see many storms in the future that produce greater amounts, but 14-20" (conservatively) plus those winds are extremely extremely rare.

I can get wind in a rain storm. a thunderstorm, or after a frontal passage and had more damage and better winds from the march noreaster in 2010.

Snow storms should be graded on snow first and foremost and a lot of the area outside earthlight, forky, and allsnow saw bigger totals in several other storms, including one a month later.

Greatest storm I've ever been through, the dramatics/time of year/etc only added to it and put it into a league of its own.

I have never seen snow come down that hard -- the winds were ferocious despite me being somewhat away from the coast -- and the banding was out of this world.

I remember being on the phone with forky during a jebwalk and discussing how this was likely a once or twice in a lifetime event considering how it all transpired.

One that I will certainly remember forever.

Yea seriously...i said the combination was what made it great, places on long island (suffolk county) that got less than 18 inches instead saw winds near 60, i think there were gusts over 65 on the south shore, bayport i think...it was the combination, but i still think 1996 was better, long island did get higher amounts, i think only central park got less??

Boxing Day Im pretty sure most of nassau county saw between 16-22, cant trust that JFK reading, but the snow drifts were much bigger than 1996 i think.

During my jeb walk the best part was the wind, 2 feet of snow without wind is not as good as 1 foot with 60 mph winds IMHO. I will never forget standing in the middle of town when one of those gusts came through, it was a pure whiteout in the middle of nassau county. My fiance was worried i was gone so long, the wind was just unbelievable.

Its not about the damage its about the white out conditions. Maybe where you live you have never experienced a true whiteout, but boxing day was the only time in my life i have seen a true whiteout and ground blizzard. I am not talking about zero visibility, im talking 50 mph winds where all the snow in the area whips into the air and you cant see anything. Again zero visibility from heavy snow falling is not a whiteout, im talking about virtual dust devils swirling the snow all around you. Very intense.

To each his own preference, but from a meteorological aspect, societal impact combined with the SNOWfall amounts and WIND that transpired of course...it was just an extremely rare and memorable event... If you ask 99% of the public about January 26-27, 2011, they will not remember that at all. You ask them about Boxing Day and you know they will remember it next year, 15 years from now.

In all fairness, boxing day was called a blizzard and 1/27 was a complete surprise event with no hype. Boxing day also paralyzed the city, 1/27 did not...So boxing day will be remembered also for the chaos and the hype, etc

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY/...

NO CHANGES TO THE BLIZZARD OR WINTER STORM WARNING OR THE SNOW

AMOUNTS BASED ON THE 18Z MODEL RUNS. AMOUNTS STILL EXPECTED AT

AROUND A FOOT...GIVE OR TAKE A FEW INCHES (PLUS BLOWING AND

DRIFTING WILL MAKE FOR GREAT DIFFICULTY IN MEASURING).

SOME OF THE 18Z DATA IS RATHER CONCERNING. GFS IS SUGGESTING 60+

KT AT 500 FT AND UP TO 90 KT AT 2000` (KLGA BUFKIT AT 03Z). WE COULD

VERY WELL SEE WIND GUSTS OVER 50 KT RESULTING IN SOME SIGNIFICANT

POWER OUTAGES.

MEDIA...PLEASE RELAY THE WIND IMPACTS WITH THIS STORM - RESIDENTS

SHOULD SECURE THE HOLIDAY DECORATIONS AND OTHER LOOSE

OBJECTS....ETC. THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER SNOW STORM.

Seriously. LI has had 4-5 better storms in the past 10 years, then Boxing day. Snow amounts wise. And 2 of them were in the past 3 years.

Notable snowstorms at the NWS Office at Upton, L.I. this century:

Dec. 20, 2009: 26.3"

Feb. 16. 2003: 21.1"

Dec. 5, 2003: 19.8"

Dec . 26, 2010: 18.8"

Jan. 23, 2005: 17.5"

March 5, 2001: 14.2"

Jan. 11, 2011: 14.1"

March 2, 2009: 14.0"

Feb. 11, 2006: 13.9"

It is also the only storm in at least the past 30 years I believe (maybe 1978 was the last one) that actually verified the true definition of a blizzard for multiple stations in the NYC area. '96 didnt do this for any station in the area except for Trenton. By the way, 96 is still number 1 in my book...Boxing Day is my number 2

Jan 26-27, 2011 had winds past 50mph, more lightning and thunder then Boxing day and for the NYC boroughs and Nassau County, more prolific snowfall and snowfall rates.

Most here and especially the public were sleeping during the insane snow and wind bands that cane through from 12am through 4am.

I *think* Islip met the criteria for that in '96...and maybe a couple of others, too...will double check.

Islip made blizzard criteria in the January 2005 event...

And look at the obs (per the diligent research of Board Member NorthShoreWx) found with regards to the 2/6/78 event at Islip (particularly between 10 AM and 10PM)

I only wish it was 1 year ago right now...**** was about to hit the fan!!

My discussion from Christmas Morning last year...

Major snowstorm on the way with blizzard conditions likely

And my update Christmas evening...

Blizzard to produce downright dangerous conditions across the area Sunday PM

Just a quick update on things as everything from the post on Christmas morning with my snow map remains. The storm is beginning to rapidly deepen across the Florida coast as of 1AM and is turning the corner to head up the coast. It already looks very impressive and is even a little stronger than forecasted by the models for this time. Periods of light snow are sporadically breaking out across particularly southern NJ and this should continue into the night. It will become steady by mid-morning and then the heavy stuff works in by 2PM this afternoon.

As we head through the afternoon the winds are going to really pick up as this storm explodes offshore. The dynamics with this storm look to be incredible and I expect a superband of snow may set up somewhere across the area to produce a 20" total. Snowfall rates of 2-4" /hr and thundersnow will be possible with these heavy bands into the overnight period. Beginning around the evening and nightime period is when the winds may get extremely impressive/possibly damaging especially across coastal NJ, NYC and east across Long Island. Models are hinting that 50-60 MPH gusts could mix down to the surface in combination with the heavy snow, which would create a true whiteout. This wind potential is a big concern as driving will be impossible and power outages may occur. Bring in any loose Christmas decorations and find a few flashlights just in case. These conditions could very well end up being as bad as they get around here for a few hours on Sunday night.

All of NYC metro including NE NJ and Long Island are currently under a Blizzard Warning from the Upton NY National Weather Service. I expect the Mount Holly NJ weather office will upgrade coastal NJ from a Winter Storm Warning to a Blizzard Warning by the morning. The heavy snow will begin to taper down by around 4AM on Monday but strong winds and lighter snow will continue into mid-morning. Extensive blowing and drifting will occur through the day on Monday.

Its honestly astounding how off you are with your numbers. I dont get your point? Most areas in nassau had more with boxing day, a simple check of the data would show that your numbers are way off. with all due respect, since normally you are a great poster.

We all know how difficult it was to measure snow in that storm, LGA airport and JFK ( ) were no exception to that...The JFK measurement is a disgrace in my opinion, but I guess when its 0 vis and 60 mph winds you get a pass on an inaccurate measurement.

We all know how difficult it was to measure snow in that storm, LGA airport and JFK ( ) were no exception to that...The JFK measurement is a disgrace in my opinion, but I guess when its 0 vis and 60 mph winds you get a pass on an inaccurate measurement.

I measured 14" from several measurements in Astoria. At work in Bayside, it was 18"-20", only a few miles east of LGA.

Overall, Boxing day is the better storm, but not for everybody.

You could very well be correct there.. I'm almost positive no METAR stations in the city and west through NJ met the criteria besides TTN though. I know we met it where I lived in Holmdel, NJ..we do very well with winds in any nor-easter over here (Even PDII might have met/came close to blizzard as well for us)...but the winds/hvy snow combo in Boxing Day out-dueled probably any and all storms in the past few decades...

Awesome obs from the 78 storm by the way...Looks very similar to Boxing Day, perhaps a bit longer with the 0 vis obs

What is amazing is how well brooklyn did, never seen a storm where brooklyn recorded 10 inches more than LGA and the highest amounts on LI proper
