  1. I’ll tell you what, tomorrow afternoon should be good stick tongue to flag pole or jungle gym weather for the kiddos.
  2. The big Western Mass cities have all canceled for tomorrow. Springfield, Holyoke and Chicopee. My gut tells me that Northampton and Greenfield will probably cancel also. Greenfield has a lot of kids that walk to school, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
  3. Most school district in most Department of Public Works are completely out of touch with the weather, outside of what they hear from broadcast Mets, TWC or the NWS p/c forecasts.
  4. Losing a Saturday in February is tough for ski areas. Crowds will be thin at best on Saturday and non-existent on Friday.
  5. Yeah, Portland should burn a snow day since they haven’t been that many of them. It’s going to be terrible conditions by the time School gets out tomorrow.
  6. That’s exactly why I could never live in a house that doesn’t have a woodstove.
  7. All of the Greenfield Public school’s are in neighborhoods or near downtown so many kids walk to school instead of taking buses. I would be a little concerned for the walk home tomorrow.
  8. GFS was certainly above normal next week but by no means a torch in N MA. Looked like upper 30's to 40.
  9. Looking at the mesos, it is such a crushing ,yet short lived cold push.
  10. Minimum of two advisory and probably warning events N of Pike in the next 8 weeks. I think the pattern flattens and we get chances, at least at our latitude.
  11. He/She is more of a N California, Mt Shasta type of native. If there are "Squatch" living in Oregon, they are probably more in the mountains. Most likely sticking to the chain of geothermal hot springs.
  12. Scouts is "Be Prepared" and nowadays Cub Scouts is "Do Your Best" Greenfield is one of the few towns in MA that still have a decent size Scout program.
  13. Back in 1998 I was solo camping for a few nights on the Coast of Oregon. Nice older hippy warned about such waves and told me the most dangerous aspect is the sweep of debris they carry. I laid in my sleeping bag thinking about some Oregon sunami crushing me, with a drift redwood trunk or being stomped, by the half dozen deer, hanging out 50 feet from my tent.
  14. I like the 10 day period after the 7th or so. I think N MA cashes in on a system going under us by mid-month.
  15. Yeah seems remarkable but I definitely recall other cold snaps where we went from single digits to rain in a day or two. That's the worst, going from frostbite to cutter.
  16. It builds lawsuits if somebody gets frostbite. I'm all for Scouting events in all weather but starting the day below zero and then being outside for 6 or 7 hours, is probably too much for the younger kids. The fire pits and warming hut is only good for so long.
  17. Fisher's can be nasty but usually stay away from human habitats unless you have chickens etc.
  18. Major Boy Scout event at Camp Moses in Westfield Saturday with some Troops slated to camp Friday night. I'm assuming they cancel the camping but hopefully the entire event is postponed. All day in that cold is too much when you are starting the morning below zero.
  19. Yeah, I was thinking about that earlier. People are going to be caught off guard by the combination of wind and cold coming out of work etc Friday. Out for a few drinks or dinner after work and then walking out into ULLR's wrath.
  20. Have you had any predator birds move into the neighborhood? Hawks, Owls? Maybe coyotes are getting them.
  21. They are doing just fine in my yard. I have families of both gray squirrels and black squirrels.
