  1. What ever happened to extreme winter cold fronts with 50mph wind gusts and snow squalls.
  2. So the 6z GFS goes from a raging snowstorm nor'easter to a 12z total miss.
  3. I agree, as we get deeper into winter we don't necessarily need arctic air. However the coldest of the air has for some time now been out west and then goes east mostly to our south. As of now the pattern does not seem to be changing much, we are just getting naturally chillier and this could be good enough for inland areas.
  4. The models seem to be saying the same thing that has been happening for a while now, for the next 10 days the bulk of the cold air goes to our south and west.
  5. So would folks rather have a colder climate with less snow like the 70s and 80s or a climate like we have which is milder with more snow. I think a good point was made by Volcanic Winter, when will it get so mild that we start to lose the elevated snow totals.
  6. Just seems like a very short time frame to make much of a conclusion.
  7. Be this good or bad, correct or wrong, most people are probably glad that winters here are not as severe.
  8. Heat island in full affect this morning. A frosty 23 here and only 36 in Central Park.
  9. Yea there are reasons why this happens but to a casual weather observer it is a pretty good rule of thumb, stormy on one coast and quiet on the other. It can go back and forth but it is not common for both coasts to be in the action zone at the same time.
  10. Yes this is a definite pattern as long as I can remember, stormy out west and quiet in the east and vice versa.
  11. That is usually when real winter weather starts in my area.
  12. .57 inch of rain here, peak gust only 31mph.
  13. My area is under a freeze warning for tonight and tomorrow night. Meanwhile it went to 27 on the 15th and 25 last night and it is already down to 27 tonight. So why is my area still getting freeze warnings.
  14. 25 here this morning. Buffalo proper got about 18 inches of snow with some more coming tonight.
  15. Should be interesting. Watertown NY area also. One thing that might keep accumulations down a little is the temperatures which will be around 30. The snow will be more wet than dry, like a December or January Lake Effect. If they get numerous feet of wet snow, could be bad for roofs.
  16. 41 here, .48 inch of rain. Northeast wind getting busy gusting to 24mph. Nasty night.
  17. As was mentioned earlier, the Lake Effect is going to be in full force this weekend. With, apparently a WSW wind, the areas around Buffalo and Watertown seem to be in the bullseye.
  18. First freeze here, 28 was the low, now 36.
  19. Temperature already dropping to the upper 30s here
  20. I think Manhattan has their first snow, sometimes before their first freeze.
  21. I understand southern Nassau may be a little more urban than southern Suffolk but not really that much especially western Suffolk. So I don't know why southern Suffolk is different especially far eastern Suffolk like Montauk area.
  22. A freeze watch is up for southern Nassau but not southern Suffolk. I am glad to see northern Nassau is not included. Usually the NWS seems to put up advisories by county lines whether it makes sense or not. Regarding southern Suffolk is it because they don't think they will have a freeze or they believe, probably falsely, they have already had one. I believe the low so far at Islip is 36.
  23. While we bask in this warmth, parts of the upper midwest are seeing night time lows near zero. By the end of the week it looks like nearly the entire country will be colder than normal.
  24. Ended up with 1.26 inches of rain yesterday and .04 today for a total of 1.30. Currently 70 degrees, my sixth 70+ day of the month. Winds have gusted to 25-30 but less than what I expected.
