    In terms of a colder pattern, it looks like a two step forward, one step back....step down pattern for October. Meaning, it looks progressively colder with each week.

    Great photos, fountain. Looks like a pretty big cool down is beginning to show up on modeling - sooner than later. I think Helene might well have broken the summer pattern.

    Man, the South Fork in Kingsport has been sort of off-and-on muddy since this event started, but was running reasonably (and oddly) clear yesterday. Even the water at Warriors' Path was normal. Whew. Not today - at least in Kingsport (haven't been to Warriors'). The water is maybe as muddy as I have seen it. It looks like the North Fork on a bad day - coffee creamer brown. I am guessing the clear water was TVA just clearing water in advance of the floodwaters. I am guessing that today, the waters from the Watauga have made it into the Holston system. Sometimes it takes a few days for muddy water to traverse through Wilbur, Watauga, Boone, and then Patric Henry lakes.

    The number of missing has increased drastically today in both NC and E TN. My heart goes out to their families. I can’t even begin to understand or imagine, Aid is streaming into the area right now. Thank you to the folks who are working this. We saw a convoy of medical personnel this evening. They were headed east on 26.

    @Holston_River_Ramblera blend of Hugo and Opal was indeed the accurate comparison I think. The RGEM was incredibly accurate.

    I think we are only just now scratching the surface in terms of knowing how bad this was for the people of both sides of the Apps. 33 people are now listed as missing in Erwin/Unicoi.     DT always warns that modeling likes to erroneously repeat big storms. That said, the pattern supports GOM storms right now it appears.

    The other thing I don't know is if railroad service has been disrupted by bridge issues as well. If it all gets moved to road, gonna be crazy busy....detours on top of detours. I bet I-81 here in TRI is gonna be nuts. Did RR bridges survive the flooding?

    I think the area around Damascus/Taylor's Valley were hit pretty hard as Whitetop Creek got out of its banks. I know it was shared by Matt last night. I just don't think we are hearing much from that area due to limited communications. I worry that is true for many mountain communities in NC and TN. I think they are still working to get people out via helicopter today.

    The Jackson Love Bridge in those photos may well be the only bridge in Tennessee over the Nolichucky for miles and miles and miles. Hopefully they get that squared away. That is the lone lifeline to civilization for everyone on the east bank.

    Anyone know anything new about the Nolichuckey dam failure possibility (see WJHL)? They had listed failure as imminent late last night. I haven’t seen an update....

    Even downstream, the bridges are gone - are there any bridges over the Nolichuckey which survived even downstream? I think one would have to go over Unaka Mountain to get to the next bridge from Erwin/Unicoi. People on the east bank are cut off from the rest of Tennessee in large part. Hopefully they can get a temporary bridge installed like the military uses. That is going to be a really pressing need almost right out of the gate. During winter when the mountains gets snow on them, they(folks living on the east side of the river) won't have a lot of options to go to North Carolina.

    So, are there any bridges left over the Nolichucky in Unicoi or Lamar? I was looking to see if 26 could get re-routed through town. I think all of those bridges are gone. Unless the Jackson Love bridge is still standing(and not sure that it is), there are several communities that are cut off and will have to go to North Carolina for supplies?

    And yes @fountainguy97(you broke the news here), the Unicoi sheriff is quoted in a WJHL article as saying the I-26 bridges are a total loss. That means both I-26 and I-40 into North Carolina are now likely closed. Whew.

    For NE TN, SW VA, W NC....this is going to end up being a benchmark, historical event. There will be high water marks for this that will be found 100 years from now, and people will be amazed. For me, just hearing the high winds overhead will be a memory. I knew when I saw the radar go yellow, orange, and red over NE TN(northeast of I-26) this morning that trouble was brewing. As noted earlier, it was just too much. The original Roan Mountain floods from a few years ago were warm rains hitting deep snow on top of the mountains. It really was two events releasing water at the same time - rain and melting snow. This event was like three - the PRE, the water from NC, and the intense, tropical downpours this morning on the West slope of the Apps. Flood warnings were posted in the Foothills pretty quickly today. I was thinking that the actual event(Weds to Friday) looked like one of those atmospheric river events that hits out West.

    I hate to hear that. I appreciate the update. That gives us a good idea of just how wide the effects of Helen have been. Has anyone heard from @Daniel Boone? I know we have some other posters in that area. TRI definitely had a lot of wind damage today in the form of downed trees.

    Thanks for the update. So I-26 is not just flooded but indeed collapsed? Whoa. That means 40 and 26 are down for a bit. Glad u are ok. I know we have a couple of posters, including you, who were over their today. We knew something had happened at a ballad hospital and just thought maybe it was rain and ankle deep water due to initial photos. We were crazy shocked by the ensuing updates.
