  1. We used to joke about that out on the deck....come on out with us in the afternoon and we'll show you a prevailing wind... a SE that will kick your ass...seen it break the windows on a 65 foot head boat. Water pouring through the cabin....
  2. I was just out at sea today and the captain was telling people to come out this week because Sunday was gonna be a mess.
  3. That was a real dud here in CNJ....5 inches of sleet. And totally predictable, Mitch Volk was on here the night before saying that it was unlikely NYC and surroundings would see much snow. Based on March storms struggling to get over 10 inches.
  4. We love ya. Don't ever change. But I don't really expect to need the snowblower this winter. Don't even know if it it'll start.
  5. It was downright balmy and stormy. Blew my front screen door clean off when I opened it.
  6. I saw that too and laughed at it. Why would anyone pay attention to JB? Frankly, these long term forecasts remind of the guys at Bloomberg trying to predict the economy.....they're pretty good at explaining why they were wrong.....I'd throw fisheries biologists in there too but that's a little too inside baseball.....
  7. Generally in CNJ if it doesn't snow in Dec you can write the rest of the season off. I think Jan 2016 was a rare exception, maybe Jan 2015 not sure. Of course the sample size is small but I remember reading this some 30 years ago from a Rutgers met and it seems pretty reliable.
  8. My BIL had his plow out this morning....hates snow. Augusta area.
  9. Was pretty cold on the water off the Rockaways most of the day; fog and southerly breeze and overcast. Sun broke out late but not enough to save the day.
  10. It was also one of the worst movies ever made. I know, my dad took me to see it when I was a kid. Don't even think you can find a copy today.
  11. It's going to blow most of the week. Very depressing. Mariners can't catch a break this year. Anyone planning on going out in this has to be nuts.
  12. Based on what i have seen over the years, for the most part, I don't expect a lot of snow in an El Nino year.
  13. One or two, yes. but 86, 88, 89 I don't remember anything significant. You can count the decent storms.....2 in 1982, one in 1983, one in 1987....come to think of it, 79,80, and 81 were all lean as well. It really wasn't til late 93 that we began to see big snows again. Truthfully, if I never have to break out the snowblower again, I'm ok with that. It's just that winter weather still kinda sucks around here when it is a drizzly sulk, and it is still too cold to do anything else.
  14. Yes. They let the shark pull them around till it gets tired, then they release it. Not allowed to keep most sharks.
  15. Never mind that; there are some pretty big sharks feeding on those blues and bass. There are guys who kayak fish for sharks right off Coney Island. I've seen big threshers breach there myself.
  16. Anything you could keep? We won't go out at our age and crank til we die just to release everything. FTW, first they are too small to keep and now they are too big. We are close to just having it shut down again like the 80s. i do have a bonus tag.
  17. I didn't see any bunkers in the Sound but the fish are feeding on peanut bunker; the big blues are eating the porgies, that's why they are there and not in Raritan. I don't know what the wind will be but a southwest with an outgoing would be less rough, and you'd have wind with the tide. There are plenty of reports of stripers off the coast and heading north; Sandy Hook is holding some fish. Trying to get out but the porgy fishing is so good don't wanna leave it for stripers, when you have to release most of them.....this has been some great fall weather for boating and fishing after a terrible Sept. Maybe we'll get a little of November in as well. Got out yesterday and had so many fish I was giving them away to others by 1 pm. Once again, 45 mins from NJ to City Island in them morning, 3 hours to get home, even though we got in early. But what a gorgeous afternoon! Even the Bronx was looking wonderful with the foliage, and the best is yet to come.
  18. Any day that warm this time of year is going to have strong southwest winds with it.
  19. I went out today out of City Island. Was cold so I plunked down 30 bucks at the tackle shop for a 5 dollar pair of gloves when I have about 200 in my closet, which I forgot. Sank the boat with porgies, and by noon I was shedding jackets and sweating bullets. The Sound has been hot this year, and it only takes about 45 mins to get there from NJ, however the ride home is 3 hours no matter how you slice it. Boats out of Point Pleasant and Belmar have been doing well at the edge of the Mud Hole, but you better pick a nice day ( about 15 miles out due east ). Don't bottom fish out of Atlantic Highlands, it has been terrible. Stripped clean by draggers and pot fishermen. There is one boat targeting stripers though, and doing well. My advice is play hookey and go Wed or Thursday. Always crappy weather on weekends....you needed sun glasses and sunscreen out there today. A gorgeous day, even the Bronx looked lovely.
  20. I worked there,I'm telling you what I saw. And I worked in more than one district. Also, employees were prone to sue when they slipped as well. Every walkway has to be cleaned. Or you are liable. Case closed.
  21. We got some flurries here. Didn't snow much the rest of the season. Was probably the worst until last winter came along.
  22. We have 3 days of bad marine conditions coming up which will be enough to impact migratory fisheries. For mariners it is not a quiet time.
  23. Because one kid slipping on the school sidewalk and getting hurt will cost the school district a lot of money. I worked in schools for 31 years; our most common response to lawyers was " how much?"
