The 1998 ice storm brought down almost the entire electrical grid in the north country. This led to farmers having to milk their cows by hand then dumping the milk since they couldn’t get it picked up. So just remember how destructive these storms can be.

So many burns. The pessimism cones when the same thing happens over and over again. It is looking great for Buffalo to Watertown again. Living on the edge here.
I considered contacting Constantine...
The event is still 5-6 days away so now is not the time to be pessimistic. The talk last night was there was more likelihood that the cold air and TPV (there, I got to use it) would push the baroclinic zone south. Let’s hope it stays just south of us and we get predominantly frozen precipitation.

Can't believe there isn't an obs thread for this blizzard!
10°, flurries continue. New dusting on the ground.
At the last observation from the Albany airport the visibility was down to 1 mile so decent snow has made it that far north and west. Looks like they could get 1-3, 2-4 inches.

The “Big Whistle” was one of a kind. A one eyed former referee. Some of his classic expressions: “He went around him like a rope around a post” and after Anders Hedberg missed a wide open net: “He couldn’t spit in the ocean off the end of the pier”
Im not sure what got into Francis when he decided to disband the team. It started when he traded Giacomin to Detroit. His first game for Detroit was back in the Garden against the Rangers. Giacomin was so loved by Ranger fans that they loudly cheered against the Rangers that night with chants of Eddie, Eddie. The game was won by Detroit.
Ratelle and Park both went on to have successful second careers with Boston as much as I hated that team. When I was a kid I loved all the fighting in hockey at that time. When I see those games now it doesn’t even look like hockey.

I think we can all agree that we kind of need a 3 day torch to melt some of this snow so that we have room for more. And the sidewalks and parking lots can be cleaned off better to keep everyone safe.
Heresy I say!

What's crazy is that they won three Cups in their first 15 seasons. Totally different game in a far different era but they still count. I remember reading that World War II decimated them, as many of their top players went overseas to fight. They never could seem to catch a break. This was a team that got kicked out of its home arena at playoff time back in the day because the circus brought in more revenue to Madison Square Garden than hockey did. The Rangers also had a history of bringing in big name players who were approaching the end of their careers. Terry Sawchuk, Phil Esposito, Guy LaFleur, Marcel Dionne, Gretzky, etc. It worked out with Messier but you're right; it took every ounce of his determination to raise that '94 Cup.
I think I’ve made my age obvious but I became a Rangers fan in the late 60s when we got a NY tv station (WOR) on cable. My hero was Rod Gilbert (RIP) and the rest of the GAG line and Eddie Giacomin. They made it to the Stanley Cup finals in the early 70s but couldn’t get past the Bruins. Then the team was broken up by Emil Francis. They had the magical run in (I believe) 79 with Jon Davidson but wasn’t until the early/mid 90s that they became contenders again. Then about 10 years ago they had several good years with Lundqvist et al. They have a pretty good team this year but I’m not sure if they’re cup contenders. BTW, I think it’s ironic that I grew up in Little Falls, NY. and you’re in LF, NJ.

Still mad he wasn't able to get a cup, 100% deserved one.
The Rangers are a cursed franchise who had teams in several eras that were capable of wing the Cup but just couldn’t get over the hump. If it wasn’t for the will of Messier in ‘94 their cupless streak would be at 80 years.

There was a poster named Logan from eastern ny that used to post a lot on here back in the day.
I just asked about him. Stash responded with some info about him.

I wonder what a board like this would have been like in March 1993. Of course the number of models to analyze were far fewer than there are today. The non stop posts for the storm of last week would have been nothing compared to the lead up to the superstorm of 93.

I think you're referring to Rick (Logan11). Good guy, and he still pokes around from time to time I think. I think he spends most of his time over at another board that a former disgruntled New England poster started a few years back.
That’s the guy! Like you said he seemed to be a good guy but I don’t think he really posted in this sub forum.

Wasn't Eastern where the boards split regionally before the it ended? I remember trying to keep up with the Valentine's Day storm there, and not being able to keep up with the fustercluck main model thread. I had the same name, but didn't post a whole heck of a lot. For whatever reason, a few of us Upstate ENY guys post over in New England, so I jump back and forth between here and there.
Whatever happened to the guy from the Albany area that used to post a lot. His name is on the tip of my tongue. I think he lived (maybe) in the Helderbergs. I think he used to post in the NE sub but I don’t think I’ve seen him in quite a while.
