More than the direct warming from Hunga-Tonga, the water vapor getting into the winter stratospheric polar vortex will on balance tend to strengthen it. We already saw that in the southern hemisphere last year, with record cold winter vortex temps.

Looks like aurora were visible at our latitude last night if you could somehow avoid clouds and city lights. Several posts on Twitter with pictures from Shenandoah.

I saw a thread on Twitter with some more thorough analysis and they say that the NY state minimum of 0.1” in Saugerties was only like 3 mi away from the (legit) state maximum of like 33” on top of a nearby hill. Wild stuff.

This recent storm had a 43” report in Beacon, NY, that was surrounded by a bunch of like 8-14” reports lol
