  1. Wasn't there a discussion a couple 3 years ago, or more, about why snow seems to disappear under evergreen trees even when it's very cold?  I tried to search for it but can't find it, probably me doing something wrong.  I'm only asking because once again under a grove of evergreens on my property the snow is completely gone exposing bare ground.  5 inches poof, gone in a week without a temp over 20.  May not of been this board but still, and if I remember there  wasn't an exact reason.  Could be wrong, just curious.

Man what a pattern for this region. Break out the snowmobiles & hockey skates, good shot that 20 degrees is not achieved in Toledo for the next week.

You had a chance to get up to the mtns this winter?  They're having a pretty good year below 3k feet.  Can be iffy on the Carolina side a lot of seasons.  My ex wife said Maggie valley as had a really good winter so far.

  3. Got a nice burst of Texas flake +SN just before dawn this morning for almost an hour.  Enough to completely cover the dogs in about 10 minutes.  Rough measurements of 1.5 to 2 around outside this morning for the 24 hour period.  Looking like our friends south of I70 in IN are getting some well deserved amounts.  Seeing a lot of 2-4 inch reports down there, and it may stick around for more than a couple days.  This pattern can stick around for the next 2 weeks as far as I'm concerned.  It's been a while since it's looked and felt like winter around here without frozen slop or torturous barren cold being dominant.

  4. Been SN to -SN here for the last 2 or 3 hours.  Pixie to quarters and back again but steady.  About an inch so far.  There seems to be a touch more moisture than forecast (doesn't take much with these temps) and the subtle forcing seems to be hanging around longer than forecast.  Returns to the west looking decent so maybe add another inch or 2 by morning if we're really lucky.  Keep the Swoop McClain ripples coming :weenie:

  5. I'm happy where I'm at.  As long as the BCZ pretty much ripples along where it's at it keeps my mini glacier in place, keeps any brutal cold just to the north and keeps a to much rockin WAA to my south.  I prefer a weeks long chilly winter phase with 1-2 here and there and a 3-5 tossed in for good measure.  We don't get a winter spell like this very often so I'm on board.  Better than a potential big dog that usually fails along the I70 corridor followed by frozen mud.  :weenie:

Him winning in TB doesn't have the same resonance. If he was still in New England and won, I'd be seething. Also, good to see Bellichick getting smacked down for being arrogant.

This season was the first time I have rooted against the Bucs since Steve Spurrier took them to an 0 and 14 record when I was 14 years old., leaving the Chiefs as my favorite team for the newly formed Bucs.  I have been a Bucs fan since their inception.  I have suffered the ridicule, the embarrassment, the attacks for being a Bucs fan.  The entire time the Bucs were in the black and blue division that is most of this sub, and every team chalked up two wins before the season even started because they each had 2 with the lowly Bucs.  I lived in Florida and got 2nd degree burns from sitting on the shiny aluminum benches that some engineer from Green Bay thought was funny to put in the Big Sombrero, in the Fl. sun, creating a human BBQ pit.  I went to tons of home games where there were more Bears, Packers or Lions fans than Bucs fans and they treated those games, and the area, like middle aged men on Spring Break.  I held fast for this team for 45 years.  45 years of humiliation.  45 years of ridicule.  45 years of being the skinny kid shoved in the locker. Those 2 flags right before halftime were as suspect as Bellichecks alleged involvement in low pressure balls. I bailed this season because of GQ.  I will never return to the team of my adult life as long as GQ is there.

  7. Had about 30 min of fat flakes and vis down to a 1/4 mile, at least thats how I measure vis to my neighbor thats a half mile away.  I couldnt see his street light for about 20 min thats usually a 1/4 mile vis.  Swept a half inch off the deck.  Fat flakes were 3/4 by themselves lol.  I'll call it a disappointing half when the offices were forecasting 1-3.  Temps rose from 11 to 16, but finally now falling towards the forecast 0 low.  We shall see

After traversing this lengthy period of very cold temps and things start to warm back up I think the feeling by most (especially the public) is that we really turned the page on deep winter.  Could be the first hint at spring fever for many if we suddenly get a few days in the 40s for example, after such a long period of cold.  Days are getting longer.

I'm definitely enjoying these deep winter conditions; the deep snowpack, arctic temps, frequent snow events, etc.  I'll def enjoy whatever else ma nature throws at us going forward, but after this long stretch of deep winter I'll definitely start to think more and more about spring, and severe convective events, outside BBQs and the like.  B)

Whatever.  My winter just started.  BBQ on ice till I get my fill lol.

You can at least double those numbers with the extreme cold air in place

You seriously want to double GFS snow amounts 2 weeks out?  If the fantasy range brutal cold the GFS is bringing happens Birmingham AL is gonna get more snow than we will lol.  It's advertising 2014 cold and trust me we're not built for that, don't want it, MN and IA can keep it.

I think these models are over doing the long term and the only thing I base that on is the fact that temperatures warmed almost 12-15 degrees for this early week cold spell. Euro next weekend is showing below zero for my area and I feel like it will be a tad warmer when it gets here.

GFS needs to do a reboot or spyware check.. something.. geeze.

Where are you at?  I've been underperforming temps for a month.

Have -16 in the point for tonight.  HRRR has us hitting -22, and the Euro shows -15.  Winds get pretty close to calm by daybreak so wouldn't be surprised to see some spots make a run at -20 with all the deep snow cover in place.

Great time to clean the freezer and not be in a hurry lol.

    It’s pouring snow in Kokomo.

    .

I can attest.  Had to go to Marion and it was some heavy heavy stuff.  Texas flakes.  WAA finally moved in but that 2 hour burst protected our snow pack.  I still have 4 inches of concrete on the ground.  Was very concerned we'd lose it before this cold spell and have a barren tundra freeze out.  Me being a clipper fan, if we've got a nice layer of glacier on the ground and get into a clipper or quasi clipper pattern for 7-10 days that results in a decent winter for us.  We get a few weeks of not having to worry about precip types.  If they're hybrid clippers just means they're juicier and instead of 1-2 we might get 2-4.  3 of those in a week on top of a 4 or 5 inch glacier, with clippers being normally windy, usually leads to some really nice drifting.  I've seen a clipper drop 4 inches on top of a 2 or 3 inch glacier with 40 mph gusts and temps in the teens create 3 foot drifts in spots.  Horizontal avalanches is what I call them lol.  I love clippers in our climo :tomato:

FWA and surrounding areas quite a bit colder than modeled thanks to clearing. Think HRRR has the right idea. 0Z NAM has FWA getting into the upper 30s Thursday afternoon, but it also had us at 24 by midnight. We're 16 right now.

00z HRRR has us getting to 33/34, it had us modeled at 19 by midnight. This colder solution will obviously translate to a better shot at getting more snow than rain. Still expecting about 1-2" here, though wonder if we could see an overachiever.

Forecast low of 24 here.  Current temp of 13.  Was forecasted to be a high of 36 earlier Wed. never got above 25.  Talk about underestimating a mini glacier snowpack.

We're at 10" or close. Will reach 10 by end of night. Not looking like my call was too far off when you account for melting.

That stick is slanted about 3 degrees to the right, about 87 degrees instead of 90.  Penalty! lol.  Congrats :tomato:

Last gasp snow still snowing decently here. Measured the snow on my backyard bar (concrete top) and it had 9.5" on it. That's untouched since the storm began. So total storm total has surpassed dd's, considering compaction/settling. Finally, the drought is over, lol.

And a minor rant, which vortex probably shares, but the few local observers around really don't know what the f*ck they're doing with snow measurements. Always some nonsensical amounts. One county CoCoRAHS observer reported 2.7" of snow on 0.71" precip this morning at 5:00 AM. The storm was 99% snow. And the ratios certainly weren't that sh*tty. :arrowhead:

As you know I am the King of the Redneck Slant Stick.  Reviewing reports, will be issuing penalties soon :pimp:

Finally got the driveway clear. Glad I splurged on an Ariens 2 stage blower this fall! Really tough to get accurate measurements here due to all the drifting but I’d guesstimate 10in here just south of Racine, WI on the lakefront. Thank you old man winter! Come back soon!
