The “I bring the mojo” Jan 30-Feb 1 potential winter storm
NGTim replied to lilj4425's topic in Southeastern States
Despite the maps, or maybe because of the trends, I’ve convinced myself I’m going to wind up in the bullseye here in NE GA. Mods go ahead and kick me off the board for a few weeks. -
Met1985, am i looking at that correctly, a big trend West, even SW? (Of course I’m focusing on NE GA). I seem to be on the fringe every other time I’ve checked.

Southern Crippler - Get well soon Jimbo Storm Obs
NGTim replied to BooneWX's topic in Southeastern States
29.5/29.3 here in Dahlonega Ga which was supposed to be one of the hardest hit cities. about a quarter to half inch of sleet on the ground, no ice in the trees. Power still on. So far have dodged a huge bullet, but probably not out of the woods yet. -
Start the thread! (But wait till Feb 1)
-
all i want out of this at this point is sleet
-
bad sign when you come home from work and go to the forum page and cliff dive is at the top. How is Jimbo? Did he have a miraculous recovery and doesnn't need surgery now? If so, good for him.

I am nostalgic for the old days when I’d check the newspaper or the local evening news once a day, and here I am on Tuesday checking the latest by hour and minute, multiple sources, for something thats not supposed to happen until Saturday. It’s excruciating, but, we have no choice these days. I guess good problem to have!

what are you saying, nothing for Middle Ga?
-
LOL i agree, but, it seems like, in addition to the exact right combination of moisture and cold, one pre-requisite of a good storm is there has to be one big dust-up in the forum, and someone get kicked off, or almost kicked off the board. I thought 316 and somebody else were going to do that a few days ago, but they were mature and wound up with a civil discussion. I don't want to get kicked off, but I think if that discourse had gone off the rails, maybe the storm would have overperformed for everyone ;-)
-
No doubt. If anyone deserves a storm or at least some flakes to get out and walk in, its Larry with all the work he puts into other people's storms. Also sending hope to everyone else down there. Growing up in Middle GA was brutal when it seemed like every snow map on WMAZ showed snow ATL and above. (except for '73 of course ahem)

I need to move somewhere that gets more snow. Currently looking at Beech Mountain, or Valdosta.

Valid point

We need to set it free and if it loves us it will come back. I don’t remember many that hit, that we didn’t loose 2 or 3 days before they came back.
-
Checked my cocorahs back to 2010 when i started. it is not as much as Helene was here, but that was over 3 or 4 days. But pretty sure its the highest 24 hour period i've measured.
-
6.23 inch rain event total here in Dahlonega, GA. 6.18 of that came in a 24 hour period between fri 1:30pm and sat 1:30pm. Surprised no other obs in here for this event. Am in in the right section.

Thank you @GaWx for taking the time and the care to provide that data. Of course I had an agenda was hoping I could lessen the guilt about being glad it was warmer overall and that would not have any effect on potential snow (at least in N GA) but that doesn't seem to be the case. It was worth a try. Interesting though that near normal doesn't really lessen the chances, so thats good and I think I can hang my hat on that.

Something weird has happened to me somewhere between turning 50 and 60 plus which I am now. I no longer am just downright sad and in the dumps when the forecasted winter temp is at or above normal. When I was younger I had it really bad, as I'm sure many can identify with. If it was going to be 60 degrees on Christmas or New Years (or heck, not stuck in the 30's all day), I almost couldn't enjoy it. My older, I guess thinner blooded self says, you know, it was really nice being in the 70s on Christmas. If its not going to snow, heck, I almost prefer it being warm. Its real, but doesn't feel right, but, I am embracing it even though I feel dirty. THAT being said, I do still love me some snow, and it got me thinking, is there a correlation between cold and snow (hear me out...). I'm talking climatologically here, over the course of a winter. Seems to me around here its all about timing, rather than if it was wall to wall cold. So my question, and I don't want to just say hey @GaWx jump on this, but..., if you took a random city like Atlanta, or maybe Asheville, since its more likely to get snow there, is there a 100% correlation between a "cold winter" and snowfall amounts, or are you just as likely to get a big snow due to timing, in an otherwise "warm" or neutral winter.

2025 Spring/Summer Mountain Thread
NGTim replied to Maggie Valley Steve's topic in Southeastern States
56 here in N Ga. Crazy how cool this feels after last weekend -
Finally a topic i can speak to with some authority. I was skeptical but had seen a lot of youtube videos. Whenever we have prolonged nights in the teens, the water trough freezes up and its a pain to bust it up every day. I put one of these freeze misers on the hose for the water trough about 3 weeks ago and it has worked flawlessly the whole time even in this long cold snap. I'd say its the best $28 dollars i have ever spent, no hyperbole. It dripped as advertised, and even kept the trough from freezing over (it did freeze around the edges around week 2, but, there was always unfrozen water for the animals, around where it was dripping in). One thing to think about is a way to divert the water thats going to run over so you don't create a hazard. Once i did that it was fine. I can't say enough about this simple product. As an added bonus, your entire system is being dripped automatically when the temps are below freezing.

@Shack i think you are somewhat near my old stomping grounds (grew up in Fort Valley). I don't even regret missing out on this one here in N GA. I remember all those years down in Peach county watching the 6 o'clock news and seeing the snow line at Atlanta and above So I am enjoying this one as much or more than if it was happening in my backyard, because i know what its like when the only excitement for years is when they put 20% chance of snow in the extended forecast. Hope the storm overperforms down there big time. I'll never forget 1973 when i was in second grade. that started a life long love of snow. watching the 13 wmaz livestream its bringing back memories. can't believe Frank Malloy is still there. He's got to be 90, but doesn't look a year past 50. Or maybe my sense of time has gone bad. anyway, I'm just shouting out to the S. Ga folks i couldn't be happier!

1/10-11 super awesome winter SE OBS thread
NGTim replied to strongwxnc's topic in Southeastern States
i have a question that is bugging the heck out of me. not sure if i can ask here or if should create a new question thread? Its sort of related to obs for this storm. Anyway, i suspect there are others here who record precip measurements for their city for the NWS. I do, for Dahlonega (DAHG1), as a station that "reports precipitation only" (ie manually). I used to be able to check to see if they got published at https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&product=RTP&issuedby=GA but it doesn't seem like that product is updated anymore. @GaWx if anyone would know where this data is, its probably you. And I am suspicious of that map above with a big swath of 5 inches for the entirety of Lumpkin Co and surrounding areas. I don't think anyone in Lumpkin (outside of maybe Suches or some mountaintop around 4k) got 5 inches unless they included 2 to 3 inches of grass in their measurement. Prove me wrong hillbillies! (just kidding i am somewhat a hillbilly), but still, prove me wrong. -

topped out a 2.25 inches here in Dahlonega GA. all snow from just before 8am till sometime after lunch, then sleet, now freezing rain. big flakes at times. I saw a graphic that looks like south of I-20 may have been a good place to be. wasn't it the icon that was showing something like that yesterday? All in all I'm very pleased. we didn't score big, but, a LOT of people got in the game. Seems untreated roads are going to be un-navigable in the morning. And looks like the NAM nailed the warm nose, for the most part.
