  1. Next summer I am going to try a few in large pots, then bring them in for the winter. I love those plants -- flower all the way until freeze, low maintenance, butterflies and hummingbirds, and most importantly, our hordes of rabbits and deer won't touch it. Looks like we got a nice weekend incoming!
  2. My little warm spot got to 33. I checked my tropical milkweeds and lantanas and they live another day, which confirms it (they die instantly at 32). It's funny how this spot is one of the last in the area to freeze, even compared to Gaithersburg. Wow at Staunton reporting 22! I think tonight is the night though as my point/click has low of 26. I will go with 30.
  3. Just incredible. Year to date showing range from 30 inches in far north MD to over 70 in southern MD.
  4. Great stories. Can you imagine this board if that happened today with some getting 12-17" and areas not far away getting 2-4? Looks like southern MD is gonna get some more heavy rain tonight. Sorry about that Waterworlders!
  5. Wow what a story. You were right in the jackpot! I missed that one as I was at FSU. My parents in Calvert told me about it.
  6. The maples behind my house are all bare now. It's funny watching the ginko street trees in parts of the neighborhood -- they turn bright yellow for a couple days then dump all their leaves literally in hours, even if clam weather. They did this yesterday. Steady rain starting to move in now and 66 degrees, which was basically the low temp. I still have potted plants on the deck full of flowers. Hard to believe we had a massive snowstorm 33 years ago today!
  7. Yeah I call it "the dark" when the trees are bare, no gardening, and it's usually dreary, and snow is very rare most years anyway. I'm going to have to fix that when I retire in 5 years because 5-6 months of dark is way too much. But man is today beautiful!
  8. Thanks for these updates. You're gonna be making a lot of guacamole ha. We've got relatives on the other side in Marco.
  9. Wow the wind is ROARING out there! This should strip a lot of the remaining leaves off the trees. Lots of raking coming up next weekend with short sleeve shirts on.
  10. Lantanas are annuals here and have to be replanted each year. As soon as we have the first freeze, they are gone. Looking downright wintry feeling tomorrow with strong winds and low 40s, but that is a big ridge for later into the week and next weekend. Get those grills ready!
  11. Heavy rain east of I-95 and just light stuff up here. Shocking! My mother and niece just voted in person down in Calvert which took an hour and 45 minutes. They said the heavy rain started just as they finished and they feel bad for all those people in line. I somehow escaped the growing season ending for NW Montgomery and my tropical milkweeds and lantana are fine. I should be able to keep them for a while longer now. Gaithersburg airport reached 30 and that would have killed them instantly. This is one of the lantanas taken yesterday.
  12. Some frost on roofs but only got to 34. My lantana shrubs live another day -- they die instantly at 32.
  13. From LWX: "While it appears that the best frontogenetical forcing (along the 850mb boundary) may set up to our north and the best instability and tropical moisture (from the remnants of Zeta) may set up to our south..." Yep, I am expecting 0.2 or less here in the central MD desert.
  14. I wish we could get the Chiefs at Denver game at 4! Look at this forecast -- yeah Denver gets snow in October but these temps are extraordinary: This afternoon: Snow. High near 19. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. (It's 13 degrees right now) Tonight: Snow, heavy at times. Low around 5. New snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches possible. Monday: Snow likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17. Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 2.
  15. Gonna be weird going from the really warm weather we've been having, to highs in the 40s tomorrow, then back to the 60s Monday. Of course my wife's Denver relatives say pssshhhh
  16. I was wondering what that might have been too -- maybe a severe outbreak, or a heavy rain event with wind?
  17. I covered by cherished lantanas to hold on to them for a while longer. We got to 37 and had light frost, mostly on roofs and cars. Garden looks good for a while longer. Could use some rain though!
  18. All the rain missing to the east. Gee what a shock!
  19. Was pleasantly shocked to find 1.1 in the gauge. We needed that badly! It's the most rain from one event since August 4 and is about double all of the rainfall for the past five weeks combined.
  20. LOL clouding up here in the desert too. Looking forward to my 0.2 to 0.3
  21. Those rain totals for central MD look tasty, but I'll believe it when I see it. It has been so dry for so long. I was just remembering the freak 10/10/79 snow -- we got 2-3 inches in Calvert, so I wonder what central/northern MD saw? No one could believe what they were seeing. There was a heat wave 11 days later with mid-80s. The all-time record for Oct. 10 is 92.
  22. That's really amazing. Here, it has been so dry that I had to mask up to cut the lawn because so much dust was being kicked up. As for Delta's leftovers: enjoy your rain S and E of I-95!
  23. Years ago we had a 6-8 inch snowpack with about 0.5 of ice glaze on top. We had a clear, frigid night with a full moon and it was unreal! It was as if the whole world was shining in silver. We were taking one-foot square pieces of ice and listening to them slide hundreds of feet down the hill and into the woods. It was something. Nice day and weekend coming up. Hard to believe that last year on this date the temp hit 98 at DCA and 96 at Dulles!
  24. Managed to get 0.3 in the central MD desert. Well less than an inch total over the last six weeks.
