E PA/NJ/DE Winter 2022-2023 OBS Thread
ChescoWx replied to Ralph Wiggum's topic in Philadelphia Region
Yesterday was only our 2nd below normal day of the year. We only experienced 1 below normal day in January that being on January 14. Well for a contrast it looks like we will start the 1st 4 days of February with well below normal temps until we get back to near and then above normal by Sunday. The coldest day looks to be Saturday with a low around 10 degrees and a high in the mid 20's. A dry period is on tap with no precipitation in the forecast till later next week at the earliest. The record high for today is 60 degrees from 1967. Our record low is 6 below zero from 1918. Record melted precipitation is 1.69" from 1897 and the record daily snow is the 8.5" that fell in 1897. -

Below are some interesting snow stats for Chester County looking at the Top 25 seasons with the most snow through January 31st and Top 25 with the least snow through the end of January. I then included the total final snowfall for each of those seasons. So far this season we have the 6th least snow through this point in the season. To show you how unusually snowy the current century has been - 6 of the top 25 snowiest starts to winter have all occurred since 2000. Yet, only 2 times with this year being that year have we had a top 25 least snow through January start. This may give cause to pause for those that seem to think it used to snow more back when they were kids! -

Well if you missed it we did get a little snow between about 330am and 5am this morning. We received a whopping 0.2" in East Nantmeal. This is our 6th winter "event" of the season and brings our seasonal total of snow to 2.4". We finished January as the 2nd warmest first month of the year in Chester County history with an average temperature of 39.5 - behind only the 42.2 average temperature recorded in January 1932. It looks dry for at least the next week with colder than normal temperatures through Saturday before warming to above normal once again by Sunday. Both Friday and Saturday will stay well below freezing with lows on Saturday AM in the single digits. The record high for today is 68 degrees from 1989. Our record low is 5 below zero from 1935. Daily melted precipitation record is 2.43" from 1915. Our daily snow record was set just 2 years ago when we were in the middle of a multi-day snowstorm that resulted in the last time we recorded a 12"+ snowstorm here in Chester County PA. Between January 31 through February 3rd we recorded 16.6" of snow with a daily record of 9.3" falling on February 1st following the 4.3" on the 31st. -

From the NWS In Mount Holly. "As of 2:27 PM this afternoon, snow is mixing with rain at the Philadelphia Int'l Airport. This means PHL now has a trace of snow this January, and it is no longer a completely snowless month. Still all rain at Wilmington, but we still have 9 hours left until February!" -

One last above normal day today before we trend closer to normal and then well below normal with a brief arctic blast on Friday and Saturday. There is a small chance of some light rain changing to snow tonight and a better chance of some snow on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The record high for today is 69 degrees from 1947. Our record low is 7 below zero from 1928. Record precipitation is 1.47" from 1939. Daily snow record is the 5.1" that fell in 2000. -

good point! I would say however the climate is changing and will always change sometimes faster sometimes slower....I would be stunned if we don't see a return to a less snowy but colder couple of decades during the 2030's and 2040's. Below is climate data for Chester County PA. Of course this is NOT for the planet but for one small county in PA no clear long term climate trends at least in my county except cyclical nature of the fluctuations. -

A pretty cloudy stretch of weather till about Wednesday but with mild temperatures continuing until a chill down to normal by Tuesday and then below normal for the rest of the week. It may very briefly turn very cold on Friday and especially Saturday morning could see temps in the single digits. We have a couple slight chances at precipitation both this afternoon in the form of rain showers and a slight chance of snow showers on Tuesday night into Wednesday AM....but as usual this season no accumulation! The record high for today is 69 degrees from 1947. Our record low is 7 below zero from 1928. Daily precipitation mark is the 1.46" from 1990 and the daily snow record is the 13" of snow that fell today in 1966 - that storm ended the following day with 14" of snow making it the 9th largest snowstorm in January weather history for our county. Oh and Go Birds!! -

Yesterday felt chilly in our mild winter but it was still over 4 degrees above normal. We should stay above normal through Monday with several days to follow this week actually staying below normal regarding temperatures. We will have multiple precipitation chances this week...but for now nothing too heavy. The 1st chance Sunday evening will be rain any chances both Tuesday through Thursday would be for snow. For snow lovers across the area the trend on the models is to keep most of the precipitation to the south and southeast of Chester County. That said - the NWS does have small chances of some snow both Tuesday night into Wednesday and on Thursday. By this Friday temps will likely stay below freezing for daytime highs. The record high for today is 67 degrees set way back in 1914. The record low is 10 below zero from 1925. The record precip and snow was from the 2 day blizzard that began today in 1922 with 18" falling on the 28th and an additional 8" on the 29th equaling the 8th largest snowstorm in our history at 26" of snow. As you can see below on the observation notes from the observer Mr. W.T. Gordon the snow began overnight on the 28th and ended by 10:30am on the 29th. Of note Mr. Gordon was the Superintendent of the Coatesville School District. I found his name and some information from the year 1910 for the district. There were 1,762 students in the district and Mr. Gordon was paid an annual salary of $1,750. That is worth $259,394.26 in compensation today. -
