  1. I would think anywhere east of the middle of Long Island ought to do it. It might be fun to hang out up in the Hither Hills area or on the cliffs by Montauk and watch the chaos.
  2. Are stats kept for high minimums? I know there were more warm overnight lows this year than last.
  3. And all my wife and daughters did every time we did something outdoors was complain about how hot it was. I thought it was pretty great! A little humid many days but overall it was a good outdoor summer for me.
  4. So just how wet is tomorrow going to end up in northern NJ? We paid for a booth at a craft fair and I'd hate for my wife's handmade inventory to get ruined.
  5. It's the same as the snarky NJ jokes NYers have been throwing around for years. Don't take it personally.
  6. I don't understand the details but yes it's based on religion. The cleanliness and nice look are due to the strong work ethic not dollars in the kitty. I think it also has to do with the state and municipalities tossing what money they do have at keeping things looking good and functioning well so that tourism dollars keep flowing unlike the Catskills where nobody seems to give a hoot anymore. The towns on the periphery other than Ithaca and Corning, especially the southern end are pretty ratty. Olean and Bath are meth addled and crumbling, even the college towns are really rough under the surface.
  7. More non native species... We just keep introducing more and more things that don't really belong. I was a few minutes from LGA yesterday at the USTA, there was a thermometer on the south side that was over 90 for a few hours. I went back to check it 3 times because it was so hot on some of the more exposed courts. Just because the number of 90+ days was officially low doesn't mean it wasn't a very warm summer. All you had to do was get away from the coast. It has been a long, warm, humid summer here with very little rain since mid June. I know that our electric bill is higher than I'd like it to be because the AC has been doing double duty since the spring right up until last week.
  8. My dad still lives in Oceanside and doesn't have any of these problems. Sounds like your neighborhood has some issues. Where are you in town? He's between OJC and Avodah off Bellevue Ave. As far as I know LI still gets their water from deep wells.
  9. Surprisingly, unlike most of the small towns in upstate NY, these places in the central Fingerlakes appear to be stronger economically too but it's only on the surface. I learned something new while I was at one of the breweries, did you know that the Amish and Mennonites don't pay any taxes at all? The county where Watkins Glen is happens to be the poorest county in the state because of this. You'd think that with 4 and 5 star resorts, big marinas and one of the premier high dollar racetracks in the country that wouldn't be the case but... Some of the neighboring areas are right behind them too. Nearly 60% of the population contributes nothing and whatever money goes into those "communities" never comes out. Some of them even track things to the Nth degree and get the gas taxes they pay back when they file, not just the gasoline but the diesel for the farm equipment and what little electricity they use to run their farms and lumber mills as well as sales taxes paid on everything else they use (which probably isn't much). I think when I'm up there in the future I will go out of my way to not stop at their farm stands and not go to their businesses because it seems to me that if you're going to take advantage of things like having roads (to ride your buggies on at 2mph) and getting the roads plowed and maintained and all of the other services that are provided by the State and local municipalities you should pay your fair share not just be a drain.
  10. Time to leave LI dude. It's not a good place and you're finding out...
  11. Man the Fingerlakes is a pretty part of NY. I need to go back there when I'm not working and take my time moving around rather than being "on a mission". There's also some A level drinking to be done there. I stopped at two breweries, had a great Mexican Lager and a really good Cocoa Porter. Next time it will be wineries and distilleries, they're everywhere. This time of year all the farm stands are chock full of good stuff. It's gonna take a few days for my stomach to return to normal
  12. You won't need to move. It will be warmer here anyway... #climatechange=golfallyear
  13. I drove out to Rochester yesterday through the middle not on the Thruway and it's mostly still summer green. It rained hard here for a good part of the night and it's wet so far this morning. It was nice to be able to have the windows open at ~75* rather than needing the AC the whole time.
  14. Tough to get a nicer late summer day than today but it looks like each of the next few is gonna try. I'm down Unfortunately I have to spend the entire week in the car but I will visit over half of the counties in the state so I ought to see some really nice stuff and get to take a ride in some really cool places after work hours so there's that. Now that I finally, after almost 6 weeks, have my car back from recall work getting done at the local Subaru dealer I can travel with my bike again My garden is definitely winding down but as that happens I"m coming up with space to plant some quick maturing fall food plants so throw some ideas at me.
  15. I wish. The front still has one huge old bugger that shades 2/3 of the yard and in back there are still 6 big ones and the neighbors on both sides have a bunch, the south side is lined with 50-75 footers on the neighbors side so the yard stays shaded and sheltered all day.
  16. You guys are funny. Drying out after the big ~.2" in 2 days. Good timing on it though as it really got to soak in rather than just evaporating off.
  17. This is the first steady light rain in over 2 months. It ruined the outdoor day we had planned but I'll take the rain, we needed it.
  18. Oh haha I came here to say that waking up to a steady light rain was kind of nice for a change. We were planning a beach and bike ride day today since it's the last day before the kids go back to college so that's wrecked but the rain was sorely needed.
  19. I've done Buttermilk but will have to do this next time, it looks great. So which trees do I cut down to make an open space for a decent weather station and how do I convince the neighbors they need to also to accommodate my fetish? There's only one open spot on the whole property and that's right down near the street so the wife nixed that idea years ago. I just don't think that under a leaf canopy (in the summer) and blocked by wind all year is the right situation. That one open spot gets scoured by wind in the winter because of it's ENE orientation and that would make for some very inaccurate readings. Some properties just aren't conducive to getting good information so I use from others in the area and make the best of it. Snowfall amounts are a little easier without the leaf canopy and being blocked from the wind isn't the worst thing because it settles nicely, granted there is probably some blow in from more exposed areas but I don't think it's too much to throw the numbers off much.
  20. Bring the mt bike! There's some great riding between here and there. For local details talk to the guys at Old Goat Gear Exchange in downtown Ithaca or Anthony at Chenango Point Cycles in Binghamton. I'm thinking you're not going to get to do that though, you're probably taking your kid to school right?
  21. One mile north of me the station has .12 and a 2 miles south its .21. Who knows, I might just hit 1 inch for the 30 day period ending today before the complex finally moves out.
  22. To even get marginal success in the garden this year has meant an awful lot of time spent. Even with the attention the yields have been anything but good. I saw you mentioned the guy in CT in another post. Putnam County where I live has had the cyano issue for a while now and a few other wonderful things too. In 2018 we had 46% of all lake beach closures in NY State. This year has been a little bit better but not much. One of the big reservoirs has turned this putrid color over the last year or so, stayed that way even through the winter. I don't trust any open fresh water around here anymore. Yay it's raining! I'm up to .1" The heavy stuff slid just south of me, missed by maybe 2 miles.
  23. Me too. Nearest station to me is under .1 for the week and only .01 today. Still under an inch since mid July unless I'm forgetting something.
