  1. You can get those small corner doorway fans to move it around, but you want to get a fan to blow at the stove to get it circulation. I have an open floor plan with two stories, so I had a fire damper vent put in to get the heat upstairs, works great. I have a free stander stove in my fireplace, but you need a big opening to do that, otherwise you're better off with an insert, I've had both and prefer the heat from my free stander much better.
  2. I love Beech, there's not much to be had around where I live but it's a high BTU wood and nice smooth bark that doesn't leave a mess in the house.
  3. I have a good feeling about this December and winter in general, we've suffered enough the last few years.
  4. I guess that we say birch bender, I had 3 white birch in my front yard during the Oct 2011 paste storm and they bent down like PF's picture, I cut them up for firewood, like you say it's not good firewood, burn's fast like pine.
  5. I wasn't born until 61 but I remember being about 6-7 years old and sitting on my sled waiting for the snow to pile up. Don't have a great memory but 4-5 inches is what I recall.
  6. Good day for drying your wood, leaves blowing back into my lawn though.
  7. Same here but I'm going to try and arrange my schedule to make it. Usually when we go to the city we take the T because we both hate driving in the city, maybe I'll do that.
  8. For some reason 12/5 always stuck in my head as a kid for the first snow, not always on that day but that's when I expected snow to start.
  9. Looks like a good rainer on the GTG day this week, If I have time I'll try and make the Boston GTG too. If it helps bring good juju for snow, I'll have to try and make it.
  10. Ill be there no matter what date but planning on 12/2
  11. Might be, snow started on Jan 12 and we had 3-4 good size storms that built up the pack.
  12. I usually do misremember, but I remember a winter back around then where we got zonked in January and has a nice pack that lasted all through a cold February. Even though Feb was cold we didn't get much but had a storm that gave us some snow changing to rain and froze so I could walk on top of the deep pack. It was the year I got my pup and I'd have to look up the year I got her. I got her in the summer and it was a great winter, thought she was an omen.
  13. A winter like 2011-12 would be nice, not a blockbuster but frequent snows and a good pack.
  14. Ill be doing all that tomorrow, my back was barking so had to rest. 37 for the high so a nice day to work outside.
  15. Just finished mine up too, nice feeling when it's done and can relax with a beer.
  16. I was at 22 when my dog got me up at 4:30, probably was the low.
  17. That's what I remember most about that year, GFS came out the night before and the New Yorkers were high fiving while we were looking at heavy rain to Maine. I'd take my chances with another year like that though.
  18. That was the Snowicane winter where we got hosed and southwest of us cleaned up, wasn't it? We actually did ok total wise, but the Midcoast and New York cleaned up if I remember correctly.
  19. My friends my age too, when I tell them I love snow and lots of it I get crazy looks and asked why?
  20. I don't think there's much there but they only have one stop there, I'm more interested in Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Copenhagen. I saw there were two stops in Iceland.
  21. I told my to try the shark, she saw it on the menu but didn't order it. I saw the Bizarre Food Guy try it in Iceland he had trouble putting it down, said it has an ammonia smell. My wife actually has been looking at a cruise for us to take, 10 days with stops in Iceland, Greenland and Scandanavia, I'm leaning on going that way, cost is very reasonable, and I like the comfort of a cruise ship.
