Lake Champlain and associated CPV is pretty snow free.  The snowpack is from the Spine and eastward.  Photo from the Lake valley looking east at Mansfield. The localized winter climate up  here is always interesting.

Is the lake totally frozen and able to walk on it?

Up here it also isn’t deep winter by any means. The temperature departures have been incredible.

The most incredible part is despite the departures, the winter hasn’t been a complete dumpster fire.  We’ve had snow cover for most of the time since November.

These departures have resulted in some very dense snow, mixed with a decent amount of rain.

    November… -0.7

    December… +7.8

    January… +8.1

February starting off at +9.5 near the end of week 1.

That is an insane flip from November.  Putting up those departures but still feeling like it’s been a winter.  Today was nice to see the sun and only +4.  “Snowpack” is solid ice.  Can walk on it.

It was like that in New Hampshire, looked like winter, felt like winter but not a lot of snow, maybe a foot or a bit more.

I’ve been reading the snowmobile forums. The upper Midwest is bleak. Not even much riding on the UP. It hasn’t been great here but at least we’ve had a little.

I wasn't so sure of my New Hampshire trip last weekend but there was enough, not a lot but enough with a nice little squall that dropped an inch while we were riding.

Good writeup here on the 20 lost skiers at Killington last month.  Lots of unanswered questions, lots not adding up.

    https://www.boston.com/news/the-boston-globe/2024/02/05/more-than-20-skiers-had-to-be-rescued-from-the-killington-vt-backcountry-but-how-did-they-all-get-lost/?p1=hp_secondary

If I had to guess, someone cut a rope or Killington effed up somehow and are covering it?  So bizarre.

Somethings definitely not adding up, different groups along with an experienced ski instructor, something was wrong, and we may never find out the truth.

Like Scott just said, what a day!!  After a week of low clouds and below freezing temperatures that mountains are just white against the blue sky.  I took the drone up to Franconia Notch.  Incredibly beautiful.  Much more so that a tropical sunset.

I want such a day as this on April 8th!

It depends on the sled you ride and the trail conditions. Modern sleds have great suspensions and rider position. It makes rides like the one @dryslotdid pretty comfortable. It also depends on trail conditions though. If you really bumpy conditions, comfort can be severely reduced.

Two hours in I was stiffening up

Of the big 3 storms in 2015, the Superbowl storm was the only good one here.  The Jan storm was like 8" IMBY but falling off quickly to the west and tainted by the bust factor.  And follow up Feb storm (#3)  was quite meh.

Yeah, they were more East based, I was lucky to catch the western edge of most of them but when I drove East into Westborough and Southborough the snow got much deeper, wish I could find the pics I took driving around there.

I skied at Ski Sundown last night for my adaptive skiing lesson.  At first I tried a mono ski.  But I couldn't balance myself with my arms and kept falling over. So we switched over to there brand new Rossignol Snow Cart.

This cart let's me lye down and control the ski's with poles.  I can snowplow,  turn and brake to control my speed.  Unfortunately I can't use it solo as the base is spring loaded for boarding a chairlift.  The chairlift has to be stopped for loading.

We took 3 Runs down from the summit.  Tom's Treat, Canyon and Nor'Easter. It felt good to ski these trails again. I got some speed on these trails. There a nice group of people.  Very friendly and Patient.  My next lesson is on February 7th.

We used a guide. I could go on my own as we owned snowmobiles when I was a kid, but this was my wife’s first ever time driving one, so we used a guide. She had a blast and we covered pretty much the whole loop up there in the 3+ hours.

    we used northern extremes.

In what town are you staying?
