  1. Just measured 0.3" of pure sleet in Arlington VA.
  2. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 920 AM EST Thu Feb 18 2021 (snip) .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... 9:15 AM UPDATE: Significant changes to the snowfall forecast since the previous update. Warm air aloft has moved into the region very quickly, albeit a very small layer that can be seen in the 12z IAD RAOB. The warm layer is between 850-775mb, with a max temp of around 1.5 C. Unfortunately for snow lovers, that is all it really takes to change snow to sleet. This has drastically reduced snow totals, as the heavier rates have yet to overcome that small warm layer, which is somewhat surprising. Very sharp gradient, with highest snow totals along/north of I-70 and along/west of I-81. Have even seen some freezing rain creep into the forecast area much earlier than anticipated, which is rather concerning. The general synoptic setup is no different than previously described, with high pressure to our northeast, and low pressure sliding by to our south. The warm advection aloft just won out today, resulting in the lower totals thus far, as sleet just doesn`t accumulate at the same rate as snow. That being said, the impacts are the same, with sleet/freezing rain leading to hazardous travel conditions across the region. So, just because snow totals haven`t panned out in some places this morning, still exercise caution when going out and about today.
  3. Just before 5 PM, I measured about 0.2" of icy accumulation in Arlington, of which half was sleet and half frozen rain , all frozen together in a sheet on my car. I didn't dare go further out to measure my driveway, too icy. My bushes have ICICLES!

  5. NWS radio just issued ISW for DC and surroundings until 7 am.
  6. In Arlington, looks like a dusting of snow (or is it sleet??)) has fallen atop the ice and sleet, turning my driveway white. Sidewalks starting to go too, but the salted street is wet.
  7. Arlington just re-salted The Hill of Doom. I just put out the last easy-to-use snowmelt on the sidewalk leading up to my door. A trace of ice on cartops, pavement still wet. And a few bits of sleet bouncing.

  12. Just went out in Arlington VA to find up to 0.1" of sleet on top of my car.
  13. I only so far got a trace on vehicles 100 feet up from DCA; they must be measuring every 15 minutes! 8 AM update: biggest flakes landing on cartops melting in about a minute. Traces of snow trying to reaccumulate on windshield wipers. ((It's almost as if DCA got 0.7" so far by pre-freezing their snowboard...))
  14. I only so far got a trace on vehicles 100 feet up from DCA; they must be measuring every 15 minutes!
  15. IMO, it's all about elevation plus distance from the Potomac. I'm about 100 feet up from DCA. Pixee may be as much as 300 feet up, maybe a bit further away from the Potomac, and Fort Reno is up around 400 feet. So I wouldn't be surprised to see DCA get maybe an inch if generously measured, me an inch or so, and Pixee and Fort Reno get the 3 promised NWS inches. That's ASS-U-MEing equal QPF.
  16. Arlington County just brined The Hill of Doom. Now if only they would do gutter-to-gutter brining...

There is a potential for hazardous commuting conditions for the Tuesday morning commute. A period of light freezing rain is POSSIBLE (a 30 percent chance) Tuesday morning across the Washington and Fredericksburg Metropolitan areas. A light glaze of ice is possible on area roads. If this threat does materialize during the Tuesday morning rush- hour, many roads could quickly turn icy. This could lead to dangerous traveling conditions, multiple accidents, and extensive delays. ((snip))
  18. LWX radio just announced potential commuting hazard for the Washington and Fredericksburg areas tomorrow morning.
  19. As a warminista, I was pleasantly surprised by the big bust (0.1") a couple of miles west of DCA. All I had to do was swipe the remaining slop off car windows. Easy on my back.
  20. AT 900 in Arlington: 2.5" total with a thin ice layer, less than 0.1, on top.
  21. Measured 1.9" in Arlington around 1 pm. But visibility is back down to a half-mile. And Arlington sent a sand truck this time up the Hill of Doom.
  22. My weather radio sounded the alarm once again for another expansion of winter storm warnings. All of MD west of the bay is now under warnings. And DC, much of VA except for SE of Richmond, and parts of WV.
  23. New winter storm warnings have been posted.
