In swva it snowed a couple of days after Christmas. Temps right around freezing which was a big warmup. It then didn’t snow another flake until St. Patrick’s Day.

89 was brutal in Nov-Dec, especially Dec. The flip that happened about a week after Christmas was remarkable.

You are probably old enough to remember the cold at Christmas in 83 and 89. Not sure what it was like up here but living in swva at the time it was brutal. In 89 it had been so cold and I was so acclimated to the cold that I spent about an hour outside hanging a few extra lights for my grandmother with temps in the low teens and snow falling on Christmas Day with no jacket or gloves and never once even felt cold. 83 was just bitter cold.

Those two shortwaves move in perfect tandem across the continent. Get the ns ahead of the southern and that storm might take on a completely different look. ie timing is the key. Pretty much what Ralph was saying lol

I mentioned that day 9-10 system this morning. It was an interesting look on the gfs ens members at 6z. Haven’t looked at anything since but you’re post caught my attention.

There’s a system on the gfs ens at day 9-10 that bears watching. Probably too warm but there are some members that are close.

I think I had more than 30. Last year wasn’t bad snowfall wise.

When I look at the gfs ensembles I see a seemingly unending string of storms. If we keep that active southern stream you guys can put your worries to rest. Before we are done it will be a heckuva winter, if that train continues. We may be unlucky for a while but our prime season isn’t even here yet.

With no real prospects for snow and no snow on the ground to create a winter scene, I’m fine with spending our bad period with 55-60 degree temps. Then ice the pattern improves bring on the cold (with the snow and ice). I’ll bet there’s a good number who feel the same.

The GFS op is cool. Blows about 3 big storms right off the se coast. Not sure I’ve ever seen that

Look at the height lines in front of it. Not only is it possible, it would be impossible for that low to go anywhere else.
