  1. That derecho knocked down so many damn trees on the Allegheny Front it caused me to get incredibly lost a couple weeks later on an afternoon hike about 5 miles northwest of Snowshoe. While I was hiking a week after the derecho a summer storm came up and sat right over me, I was instantly in the clouds. There were so many trees down with near zero viz it was impossible to follow any “trail”. 20 hours and 24 miles (mostly bushwhacking) and i ended up at my condo 15 miles from where I had parked my car to start the hike. When I started it was 72 degrees when I returned home it was 47 degrees (at 4 am on July 30th mind you) I was in a t-shirt and shorts. Because it was supposed to be a quick 3 mile afternoon hike I only brought a 20 oz. bottle of water with me.
  2. Think he was referring to the northeastern blizzard Of 78’ which was a separate event.
  3. Based on what I’m seeing and hearing you should see a flake or two momentarily out in Prince William.
  4. So how much snow is there in downtown Asheville? Can’t find reports anywhere.
  5. Makes my job as a high school history teacher look like a breeze. A lot of awesome snow (and stories though). Hopefully we can will an inch tom
  6. Reminding me of my year and a half as a social worker on the Allegheny front of West va
  7. Yeah, Asheville is tough because of it’s location deep in the French Broad River valley surrounded by mountain. But the whole area is much warmer than forecast.
  8. Same. Good luck guys! Looks like one hell of a storm. I just moved to dc from Asheville last summer. Hope everything pans out!
  9. His screen name was def accurate
  10. Wow! That’s impressive for Wednesday do you have some elevation?
  11. Boone, Barnardsville, Newland, Spruce Pine, and Burnsville all look like they will be hammered. I lived in AVL for two years, its in a bowl surrounded by massive mountains. Its almost impossible to get more than a foot of snow there.
  12. Boone's climate is awesome for being so far south. Cold, snowy and gorgeous (but the wind can be just too much!)
  13. Ha! I would have for sure chased this one, but I'm a high school teacher, can't risk being stuck down there all week. My one buddy I'd stay with lives way up in the mountains
  14. Just a quick aside for anyone considering going to western North Carolina to chase the storm. Public works in the south are far different from those in the north. Even though Boone averages 35 inches of snow a year, the state of North Carolina pays for ike 2 snowplows. In major snowstorms, the area is totally crippled, you will be stuck for a couple days until melting commences!
  15. Id suggest Boone for this one. Wytheville, Va looks close to ground zero as well. Boone is a much nicer town to visit though (kind of like a mini Asheville). I actually chased a bunch last winter around Asheville (the mountains get hammered while the city stays dry).
  16. I can just about guarantee Asheville won’t see 18 inches. They only reached it in the 93 superstorm with a far more favorable setup. Just moved back to dc after living there for a couple years. Downsloping always hurts there. The mountains around Asheville will get hammered
  17. It is! Never fly into AVL. The airport closes everytime it rains
  18. Good luck in Asheville! Just moved back to DC this summer. Honestly, I'm not a fan of Asheville when it comes to snow (the upslope snow is def fun though)... too many variables to work out to get it right, but if any are going to produce there this would appear to be the one.
  19. The trail is a great hike with beautiful views just east of Marlinton. It’s right around 3500-3800’ in that area and doesn’t get nearly as much snow as the next series of ridges immediately to its west in upslope situations.
  20. Thanks! Ive been around in one form or another since the wright-weather days and even before that!
