  1. Don't even get me started on "plausible." Sigh.
  2. I posted this GFS storm a couple days ago. We're getting three? LOL
  3. 0.51" freezing rain for Greenville, NC ??? PASS THE VAPORS! I thought we'd be saved by our proximity to the coast.
  4. Oh you Yankees, LOL. That Low is forming at Cape Lookout (Morehead City.) Wilmington is the next one down, Cape Fear.
  5. It would make the ice storm WORSE. I want this whole mess to move north and get the heck out of here. If it comes back south the ice QPF would increase!
  6. Right, right ... the GFS has done such a great job. Let me remind you of yesterday's 12Z run:
  7. From what I've read the recon data shows up on tonight's 00Z runs. As for the euro I've no idea.
  8. Hey folks, there's always the Feb 2 storm. What could go wrong?
  9. Small changes upstream may lead to bigger changes downstream. If they accrue over time one ends up with huge fails. Such is the world we live in. Seeing my Eastern N.C. digital snow go up in flames is so routine it's sickening.
  10. I used to enjoy YouTube weather channels until they became click bait central. Now they are insufferable, I avoid.
  11. Given the GFS's solutions so far this winter I'm surprised anyone has fallen for these outlier runs.
  12. Whew, that's a relief! Remember earlier estimates for ZR south of Virginia were horrific.
  13. Correct. Definitely sleet (at least in central Maryland) with the '96 storm. In Germantown at one period during that heavy snow we had "thunder sleet." That was a spell of winds high enough to sharply bend tall bare trees, frequent lightning (multiple hits per minute at peak,) and raging sleet. Never seen anything like it before or since.
  14. That would be a nightmare not only because of destruction to the power grid but on top of that the extended bitter cold expected following the storm. Whether religious or not I think we can all pray this doesn't happen.
  15. Son of a gun, I remember that! Was on Skyline Drive in Virginia heading north in my Olds 88 when a freak, violent snowstorm struck. With strong winds and cannon shots of thunder drifts built on the road so quickly I (and everyone else) got stuck. We had to wait for a snow plow to clear the drifts before we could move again. When finally getting down from the mountains saw it had only rained just below us. WILD!
  16. Ah, Pulaski, Va. Haven't heard that town mentioned in many a year. Lived in Blacksburg, Va. for a while fifty years ago and visited the beautiful Cascade Falls area. Oh man talk about peaceful, that was a place. Snow can be pretty good in winter too, I remember once putting chains on my tires to get up a steep hill until I dared go no farther. https://gohikevirginia.com/cascades-falls/
  17. Central Maryland yes, I lived in Germantown at the time and remember it well. After hours of heavy snow we were hit with by far the greatest thunder snow/sleet event I've ever seen in my 74 years. The wind became so fierce bare trees were swaying wildly as sleet began overpowering the snow and we were absolutely hammered with thunderclaps. It was truly a mind blowing experience, a movie ingrained in my memory.
  18. Ah, good old Clarksburg. You familiar with Peach Tree Road? (West side of 270 runs along a bit of a ridge.) I lived there a long time ago (1981?) Had a big snowstorm with drifts that blocked some roads. Some stranger with a tractor plowed my long circular gravel driveway before I could even come out and say hello. Friendly folks back then, hopefully the same still today.
  19. I remember the winter of '76-'77 very well ... I was 25 at the time and living in the D.C. area. It was very cold for a lot more than just one month.
  20. Increasing loud thunder and 70F here in Greenville, N.C. as storms are moving rapidly from SW to NE. I take it this is the first of the two cold fronts moving through. Possible snow showers late tomorrow night which would be crazy for this time of year.
