  1. Very true on both counts. It doesn't take much to make even walking treacherous. Heck, yesterday some slight re-freezing of water on a sidewalk got me a bit nervous. And years ago when I was in Atlanta during an ice storm (close to 1/2", there about), I saw so many trees just get shredded. Mostly pines and those magnolia trees that keep them all year-round. Half an inch on large leaves is a disaster for those trees!
  2. Nothing further from the defense, your Honor...we got nothing!
  3. When assessing the overall pattern, I take Ji and Jebman as two opposite starting point goalpost ensemble members, then gradually interpolate between them based upon the GEFS and EPS ensembles. It's most effective at D+5 through about D+30. At times, even on the seasonal scale. Well, it SOUNDED scientific at least!!
  4. Hey man...priorities!! Hold it in for awhile and check out the long range first! Jeez!!
  5. I'll probably regret engaging this, and maybe you're just trying to be snarky and humorous, but...dafuq??? Many or most of us come in here primarily during the winter, since that's the predominant interest. So of course one of the first things I/we do is to check out the threads in here if we know something potentially interesting is going on. Neglect elsewhere in life? That's a bit rich. You could argue any hobby people have that they take seriously or pursue with great interest causes the same, but that's a rather negative way to view things. Some take it too far or are a bit over the top, but most in here are not (and @Bob Chill or @psuhoffman are perhaps the two most level-headed people around here).
  6. It's a recessive gene, and so far the medical community doesn't have a cure. In fact, there may never be one! Or at least, I sure hope there never will be!!
  7. I came into this thread thinking it would be a discussion of freezing rain potential tomorrow morning... ...and all I got were bad David Attenborough imitations!!
  8. Hahaha! I remember in northeast Ohio growing up, the weather line (NWS forecast) was 931-1212. And the TV-8 (CBS) forecast from the famed local meteorologist Dick Goddard was 881-0880! I can still hear his voice on the weather segment of the local news, he'd say for updates to call "eight eight one...zero...eight eight zero" (with the pauses and all in his voice!). Yeah, I still remember those damned numbers! Sadly, Dick Goddard passed away in 2020...he really was a legend in the area and very good. Especially when it came to lake effect snow. I had a weather radio about the same time, in the early '80s! Listened to it all the time, awaiting the zone forecasts (everything was on a loop of course...observations, weather summary, zone forecasts, etc.). And I even still remember the time number from where I was growing up, 471-1212. With the automated voice saying "At the tone, the time will be..." every 10 seconds!!
  9. Yeah, winds are starting to pick up now...going to be a nice, brisk and cold wintry day!
  10. I totally agree! Something about waking up with a completely fresh pack of snow. As if magic happened overnight. I also of course like observing it while awake too, during the day, etc. Just don't eat yellow snow!! And especially not brown snow!!
  11. Yeah, but was that your first preliminary early call, your first call, the last first call, or your absolute final call after you phoned a friend and triple-dog-dared?? Scoring depends on which version of the map it was!!
  12. Nice! You should really take the highest amount where any snow is touching the ruler...so actually more like 4.3 (yes, rounding from 4.25!!!)! 3.0" where I'm at. Nice little event!
  13. Jebman, wishing for warmer temperatures and higher dewpoints?!?! What is the world coming to? Dogs and cats, living together...mass hysteria! @WxWatcher007, we may need an anti-Panic Room, or an inverse Panic Room, or something like that for Jeb, stat!! But more seriously, hope you are doing well, Jebman! And hope it was fun to live our snowy week vicariously while there in TX!
  14. Perhaps this was asked specifically to be humorous... But the irony of someone with a username of "Wetbulbs88" asking what RH stands for struck me as funny!
  15. This. For most people (even those who like snow), the "worst" case scenario would potentially cause serious travel issues, closures, etc. I also think most people might not be as familiar with what exactly a percentile (like 90th) necessarily means. Not much different than CWG using the terms "boom" or "bust" in addition to expected amount.
  16. Haha, no kidding! Just imagine all the Ph.D. dissertations that can be written on various newly named disorders!!
  17. This begs the old zen/philosophical question..."If it snows in the middle of the night and Mappy isn't awake for it, does it accumulate?"
  18. I've certainly done that for the big events, like Feb. 2010 and Jan. 2016. Would go out several times and doze off in-between! I often wondered if the neighbors would call the cops about seeing this person wandering around in the snow with a camera and a yardstick.
  19. Yes...a "WSW". Current indications are very deep accumulations of bulls**t are imminent and occurring. Be careful driving and walking around outside, make sure the waders are pulled up! We should hit CWG's boom scenario with ease. There should be a large region of enhanced BGZ (bovine growth zone), so banding is likely.
  20. I believe @high risk explained this type of plot the other day. As I recall, it represents the total snow depth change through the time period (in this case through 54 hours from 12Z today). It's not the same as what TT and other sites show, which gives the snow depth of the event itself. Keeping in mind that today and tomorrow there will surely be a decent amount of snow melt (being above freezing), I can see a net of zero or not very much considering that. But that's not indicative of how much falls for this particular event by itself. Of course, we may "only" see less than an inch or 1-2", but you get the idea.
