  1. could still be like 2005-06 and we get one big storm (although that was a la nina after an el nino which can be very snowy.)
  2. Indeed! One thing that I am starting to see again that is similar to last winter already is that it is warmer farther north.....because of more sunshine? High was 69 at Allentown yesterday with fog while it was 75 at Scranton. I also heard it was in the 70s up in Vermont? I wonder if this is a general pattern that will continue going forward. If you look at temperature departures at least in the northeast, the warm anomalies increase as you go north. It's almost like the furnace that is the Arctic has a fire burning up there that is now spreading southward. It's also logical that the center north of the country and the Mountain west would be the last hold outs to widespread warmth because they are the farthest away from the oceans and the oceans are heat sinks that absorb carbon most quickly (becoming acidic in the process and destroying coral reefs.) Being away from the influence of ocean heat sinks is also why Antarctica is not warming as quickly as the Arctic, although that may be in the process of changing now.
  3. like late summer with longer nights and more water vapor pollution
  4. I know like last year, we sometimes get rain during January thaws, but it's rare to have a night full of fog like this.
  5. Lee Goldberg keeps saying something which I think is incorrect. He keeps saying that the hurricane is "holding back the front to our west." Hurricanes dont do this, if anything, it's fronts that push hurricanes around (we see this all the time.) It's the WAR which is holding up the front, not the hurricane.
  6. I like hot in the summer, not humid. Hard to breathe air that's thick with water. My ideal weather is highs in the mid to upper 70s lows in the mid to upper 50s, with clear blue skies, light winds and low humidity, but in the summer I dont mind temps around 100 as long as the humidity is low. Last year when we hit 95 here with low humidity in early October it was amazing.
  7. My memory must be going but I remember that you brought up 1970-71 as an analog in 2007-08 and it ended up being spot on for how the winter played out. I dont know if it was an outlook per se or if you were just sharing your thoughts about similar winters from the past, but I do remember you said you thought it would be a frontloaded winter like that.
  8. This weather is utter crap. It's humid and clammy and my allergies are awful tonight. How is it that we get this kind of weather in late October and November (the most cloudy month around here), but if we get mild weather in January or February we dont get this humid fog crap? And anyone have any idea when ragweed pollen season might end this year? I'm hoping it happens before December otherwise I'll be soaking my yard in weed killing chemicals.....
  9. I remember the 1991 storm quite well! Some of our TV Long Range prognosticators predicted that getting early heavy snow in MSP was a good thing because those storms would "move east" and give the east coast heavy snows during the heart of winter. It never happened lol.
  10. I suspect 1998-99 and 2007-08 will be better analogs than 1988-89.
  11. One could easily argue that climate change and covid19 both fall under national security. They actually do!
  12. Maybe we could go after the fossil fuel cartels on antitrust grounds? Posted this on the political forum also: One of the few good things this justice department has done (and I suspect it's as a result of the bipartisan antitrust congressional hearings) is going after Google. This needs to be done to all 5 big tech companies (Facebook, Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft). Europe fines them billions for stealing and using personal data, we need to catch up. Hopefully Warren gets a big role in the new administration's Justice Dept, because she's been forward-thinking on this important issue for years now.
  13. Don, is this going to be a "dirty" warm up, in the sense that while it will be warm, we wont be getting much sunshine? I will be back on Long Island this afternoon.
  14. Well, I guess we can say it will be snowing in the places where it's supposed to be snowing lol. People have to come to the realization that the east coast doesn't usually get that much snow unless you're up in New England.
  15. Looks like all the rain dries up in Central PA and Upstate NY before it ever makes it here.
  16. a general theme we see with these kinds of winters is usually a cold start to the season (November-mid December) a big thaw around Christmas to New Years and a generally mild January and February and then a cold and possibly snowy end to the season in March into early April.
  17. it's actually completely overcast here in the Poconos, will be getting back into town this afternoon
  18. going to be our 10th hurricane. Second system down near Central America chances of developing now getting less?
  19. 1993 is a classic example....the classic couplet for snowy winters here is cold October mild November
  20. This whole escapade reminds me of the big banks and the "too big to fail" fiasco- and please just ignore our predatory lending practices. Meanwhile, Wells Fargo is back at it and they've now been caught misrepresenting themselves to steal small business covid response payments and had to fire 125 employees. https://www.cfo.com/fraud/2020/10/wells-fargo-fires-over-100-employees-for-alleged-covid-19-relief-fraud/ Nevermind all the big banks found to be laundering money for criminals who were propping up extremist regimes.
  21. As soon as that happens, real reform will begin.
  22. Right now they are too busy harassing good people on Twitter and putting their social media people on some sort of a "justification" spree for all their bad behavior on an ExxonKnew hashtag and claiming they are doing something to stop climate change.
  23. Yeah and once we get past tonight we may not have a frost or freeze until November
