  1. Walt I understand the historical significance but isn't the data tainted if the foliage isn't pruned back and/or removed? How come no one from the NWS comes to do that or tells the park conservancy to do it? It should be some kind of executive order lol
  2. take the avg of all four or simply take the avg of EWR and JFK......
  3. the most representative sites seem to be JFK for coastal Brooklyn and Queens and EWR for the rest of the area. Both radiate far better than either NYC or LGA.
  4. scientifically speaking it's consistent if all the other measuring locations are airports. airport=airport=airport airport<>park
  5. Don do you think DC gets its new 90 day streak record? Today was supposed to be close.....
  6. lol here's something funny.....I actually played some common bird sounds I hear on my iPad and I heard those birds calling back from my yard......one was a Grosbeak and the other was an Oriole.
  7. glad I dont have THAT! mine was just plain metallic shiny black, only flew a few inches lol. I haven't seen it any more. I was thinking the hissing was some kind of exotic insect (or snake?!), but that's in my Long Island home. The vultures are what I saw in my vacation spot in the Poconos.
  8. thanks JC! I was wondering if I should wait until it's a bit higher in the sky, but I want it to be brighter than Mag 4, so I guess July 23rd is the best time to see it (both Mag 3 and higher in the sky) Either way, starting this weekend, our skies look to cooperate!
  9. was mentioned on TWC when they interviewed a beekeeper
  10. and the triplet of Mars Jupiter and Saturn later on at night! If you've got a very long zoom lens you can capture the structure of the ISS!
  11. I certainly hope so.....do you think they are the source for this weird long loud hissing sound I hear during the day (and also sometimes at night?) I thought it was coming from outside, but sometimes it seems very nearby. I cant stand waterbugs, I thought they were limited to tropical climates. One time I was vacationing in Mexico and I woke up to something biting me on the neck and it was a flying waterbug (or cockroach as you said). It was HUGE. The thing I saw last night-- I thought it was a beetle because I was trying to smash it with my hand (with gloves on of course) but it kept getting away, and I've only known beetles in the insect world to have a shell hard enough to withstand the full weight of a human. Are you saying it can come up from a different drain?
  12. Chris is this also why we haven't seen a 100 degree day here in so long- last summer was the closest we've gotten since 2013.
  13. you can actually see the solar panels on the ISS on pictures taken with long zoom cameras!
  14. right under the Big Dipper! excellent! Lee Goldberg just said July 14-19 just under the big dipper....I wonder why he didn't mention that it would be closest on July 23rd so should probably be easier to see by then.
  15. so are vultures unfortunately. I've seen half a dozen of them in my trees, just sitting there, ominously, when I'm pruning my plants. Made a lot of noise to make them leave but they just keep coming back. This is the first year I've seen this happen.
  16. Don what's the highest temp the CONUS has seen thus far this year? I heard Death Valley hit 128 two days ago, was that it? Globally too?
  17. Based on what's been going on it probably wont be as bad as last winter, but still probably below normal snowfall wise (one big snowfall in an otherwise mild winter can always "rescue" us though....a la 2005-06.)
  18. these so-called cold fronts should really be called dew fronts....
  19. Yeah well DC is going to crash through their record of most consecutive 90+ days! My question for you is how long before NYC and Long Island see a big increase in their number of 90 and 100 degree days?
  20. It's very difficult to get that hot in July even in our hottest summers....I would think +3 or +3.5 is the highest it can go.
  21. 100 degree heat possibilities seem to be much reduced with this upcoming heat
  22. the higher humidity is making 100 degree heat more difficult
  23. weird....90 at JFK and 87 at NYC
