  1. I've given up on digital rain gages lol they always seem to fail during big rainfall events. I use the regular analog variety now.
  2. Lots of thunder and lightning with heavy rain here- we seem to do best with storms coming down from the N or NW!
  3. Lol I missed all this fun bickering. Now memories of last winter and spring are all coming back.
  4. Annoyed that Lee Goldberg just said that "based on new info" he feels the storm will recurve, he did say it was very early though to be predicting anything. That was Jose right! Another one was (I think) Matthew in 2016, remember early runs had it doing a Sandy-esque turn into the coast and it ended up going into SC with record rains and I think that was another one that stalled just offshore of us- both that and Jose brought welcome relief from hot humid weather with cool 30 mph gusts but no rain up here.
  5. It's really dark here and the rain just started, already coming down pretty hard!
  6. Some do slow down though like Eduouard in 1996, the slowing down of the forward speed caused it to weaken though and not even E NE saw much outside of some tropical storm winds. We had a couple of storms slow down just offshore in the last couple of years also with similar results.
  7. Wow massive differences across the area for number of 90 degree days, I suspect when we factor in humidity, things level out, as near the coast temps may be lower because of the sea breeze but the humidity and dew point is higher.
  8. Wow I suspect we beat 2010 for heat index hours above 90 and will eclipse 200 today. Dont think we'll beat 1983's record of 239 hours though. Sounds like JFK might have stayed just shy of 90 for the high today because of that south wind.
  9. Wow, Boston was hotter than LGA, that's happened a few times this summer. Is that because of less rainfall in eastern NE, Don? Also, do you have the highs for JFK and NYC?
  10. Oh wow thanks Chris, so they do keep heat index records! Was 1983 the only year with more than 200 hours of a 90 heat index? Just one hour short of 10 whole days wow!
  11. Don, has Portland set a new record for number of 90 degree days this year and if so why have they had more "hot" days than we have had?
  12. Based on temp/humidity combo and looking at these graphs, my thinking is that 1983 was our "hottest feeling" summer because it had the most 90 degree days (37 for NYC and the record for JFK prior to 2010- I think 21 there?) combined with the most 75+ degree dew point days. Maybe that can be topped by next summer too. With the rising dew point trend combined with rising rainfall totals, do you think 100 degree temp days will become more rare or will they all increase simultaneously, but the number of 100 degree temp days will increase more slowly than they otherwise would because of higher dew points and rainfall totals?
  13. Yeah I'm hearing reports on people not even being able to get their water running. NYCHA is a disaster. We're having low water problems on Long Island too for some reason. Weird thing is the hot water runs fine (because it's stored in a hot water heater tank?) while cold water is suffering from low flow. I heard something similar has been going on this summer in the city.
  14. room air conditioning just doesnt cut it with this kind of humid heat.
  15. Thanks Chris, so my subjective feel of heat was not unwarranted. Will we get to 40 75 degree dew point days at JFK? Out of curiosity what are the top five and where do years like 2010, 1983, 1993, 1991, etc fit into the list? And how does JFK's record setting summer compare to other local spots like LGA, NYC and EWR? JFK seems to be the hot spot for high dew points this summer thanks to a persistent southerly wind. I see the previous record holder for JFK is 24 days in 1983 and not one other year higher than 19 and 1983 was post el nino so I'm wondering if we get that el nino this winter if next summer might be even worse? And maybe add a few 100 temp days to the mix? Wow I looked up 2010- our hottest summer and most 90 degree days by far- only had 4 75+ dew point degree days?!
  16. What do you think of my Felix 1995 comparison? Just based on the approach from the east, not the final outcome for our area of course.
  17. If you want a comparison to a storm coming from the east, this reminds me of Felix in 1995. That season we had a lot of storms recurve around 70W but Felix caused a lot of mayhem for forecasters. It was a Cat 4 135 mph hurricane at one point but weakened as it got closer to the NC shoreline from the east and the closest it got was around 200 miles from Cape Hatteras. Some of the models had it coming up the coast to around Montauk as a strong TS or weak hurricane but that never happened, it stalled out under the really strong WAR of August 1995 (which also gave us a rainless month until the final day and widespread wildfires throughout the area), did a little loop off Cape Hatteras and went back east and all it did for our region was cause a lot of riptides and very high surf.
  18. it's why we are breaking "warm" snowfall records that were previously held by Norfolk, VA.
  19. I think 2010 was our hottest summer, and we seem to get a recurrence of bake off summers every 11 years or so, 2021 could be our next one. Funny thing is it seems like the more north you go the more 90 degree days- Boston has had higher temps than us and Portland ME set a new record for most 90 degree days this summer- I think it was either 30 or 31? Less rainfall up there might have had something to do with it.
  20. To be fair, this entire summer it has felt more like Florida here than anywhere else.
  21. I see 1985 in many of these records- the same year that Gloria hit us in September. This has been a crazy summer for high dew points and high minimums. JFK has had a weirdly "low" amount of 90 degree days, but it has most certainly felt like it exceeded 90 on at least 15-20 days. This was the hottest summer I've felt here since the early part of the decade.
  22. Why does the 2044 eclipse end suddenly over the Dakotas? And why does the 2079 eclipse begin suddenly around NE PA and not occur west of there? And is the 2045 eclipse going to be over 6 minutes in Orlando? Looks like St. Louis, MO and Carbondale, IL will get both the 2017 and 2024 eclipses' totality!
  23. Maybe by 2079 humankind will have the technology to be able to control eclipses to make them last longer and occur more frequently ;-)
  24. Thanks I already booked a hotel for Watertown, NY for the 2024 eclipse, going right up I-81! Wish we'd live to be around for the NYC-Boston eclipse of 2079 lol. Even if its cloudy for the upcoming eclipse, you can sneak in a small period of partly sunny skies like I had with an annular eclipse a few years back and got to witness 90% of totality through 10x50 binoculars for 10 sec lol.
