Krakatoa was a big eruption but if you want a large climate displacement you want something on the scale of Tambora.

Jan 1994 had 2" of ice. How long was the 12/73 event? over 24 hours of all freezing rain?

Volcanoes arent the slam dunk cooling that people think they are....you need something exceptional like Tambora. Pinatubo didn't improve our winters at all, so I dont get the fascination with that middling eruption.
-
I was actually alive when Pinatubo erupted and our winters were shit after that.
-
and Pinatubo was nothing compared to Tambora
-
also Pinatubo didn't do much for our winters, unless you think 1993-94 was influenced by Pinatubo (which I doubt....otherwise why was summer 1993 so hot?) If you want a cold winter, Pinatubo wouldnt be strong enough.....you need something on the scale of Tambora.

It's in the Southern Hemisphere isn't it? Much less effects for us

could this storm cut so far west that we actually miss out on the heaviest rains and get into a big dry slot?

isn't this similar to those big storms they get on the west coast....high elevation snow and windy rains for the coast

Not necessarily-- if it's too cold it means a suppressed storm track. We want average cold.

Looks like the AO/NAO are both going down Don? Should be good for snow after the 20th?

"No intelligent life found on this planet" zoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom!

"we have to hope precip comes in quicker than modeled" means nothing to me, just like in the 80s as now, I absolutely hated snow changing to rain storms and I would MUCH rather it be ALL rain with nothing frozen whatsoever. There's no point in wanting any snow at all with a storm like this.

if it really meant business it would be strong enough to muscle its way on over and hit us

winds are gusty here already

That Atlantic City had a foot plus snowstorm and we did not irks me to no end. You said we might be looking at historic cold at the end of the month-- what are snowfall prospects around that time?

I guess if you get far enough north you dont have much of a risk of cutting storms. I was thinking of Minneapolis.
