what season is #1? are we number #1 for longest streak without a 2" snowstorm (since that is also undisputed)?
-
I think that's why he mentioned a calendar day without 3 inches of snow, since that's an undisputed record lol.
-
Sounds intriguing, especially if one of them has a plotline has something to do with undiscovered mysterious sea life at the sea floor!

Better question is why would you want it anyway... it'll be washed away almost immediately, so might as well keep the historic snowless streak going as long as possible.- 3,610 replies

Chris, do you think the slow action on climate change is in part due to the fact that many people actually WANT a warmer climate? I've been thinking that for awhile now, and even in scientific circles people are talking about this and saying-- if our climate becomes more like Hawaii wouldn't that be a good thing because Hawaii has the greatest concentration of biodiversity on the planet so wouldn't a warmer world give us a more biodiverse world? Aside from this, wouldn't the Northern Rockies be another great location from snow since they seem to get heavy snowfalls regardless of what's going on at lower elevations?

I remember a storm in January 2008 (the infamous failed Heavy Snow Warning storm) where there was a spot of white in SW Nassau and around JFK and the rest of the area was raining. It didn't amount to a lot (1-2 inches) but people driving in from all directions were surprised to see a bit of snow on the ground here lol -
I need to read it-- whats the title?
-
sometimes we're in a really bad spot for snow too. It just depends. However in general, if you really love snow you should move away from the ocean and find some elevation. Sure the climate is changing, but we can change where we live too.
-
so if we want to change the climate, the first thing we need to do is change the ocean circulation, hmmmm

no the 70s and 80s are an aberration, we usually have a few storms every decade where we get heavy snow and Boston gets fringed or we get heavy snow and Boston gets rain. Of course they average more snow but there's a reason both we and Baltimore have more 20"+ snowstorms than Boston does.- 3,610 replies

fwiw that was an amazing time with an amazing amount of cold and snow for us! our biggest storms usually outnumber Boston's though (for example March 1888, December 1947, February 1983, Millenium storm, February 2010, January 2016, etc.)- 3,610 replies

in a way it's good-- do we really want to see, say, 1.1" inches of snow to end a snow "drought"? Not me-- all or nothing, so if we're not going to get at least a few inches, we should get nothing at all. Looks like most are onboard with the idea that our time will come later in the winter, so just wait.- 3,610 replies

When you look at records going all the back to the 1700s (using the Pennsylvania Weather Book), for Philadelphia and New York City, February tended to be the coldest month. Our coldest recorded temperature is in the middle of February and it's also our snowiest month usually.
-
is it at least going to be sunny most of the time or are we going to see more of the muck?
-
that second storm could also be very windy!
-
It can always be later in February, even towards the end of February like it was in 2015.

I envision some back end snow, nothing that will accumulate a lot, but we could have a nice post card scene with some light snows all day Sunday at or under 1"- 3,610 replies
