NOAA uses 1951-80 as an established baseline to compare future climate trends. In other words, that's considered the *normal* climate (for better or worse, but we have to start somewhere.)

I'm shocked 1993-94, 1995-96, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2010-11, 2013-14, 2014-15 aren't in the top 20 coldest list.

No winter would be fine, more big snowstorms with a warmer ocean (more chances of bombogenesis). Arctic air also has a higher chance of coming towards us if the waters are warmer.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be absolutely awesome though.

This is much more like a late 80s winter with the southern snowstorms and less snow here. A better match would be 88-89 even extending to December 1989.
