Not good at the moment. Accidents all over on the police scanner. Listening now to a multi vehicle accident on the 90 near Clarence service station. Fire truck responding slid off the on ramp. Really heavy freezing rain right now. . -

Weather the next few days is for the birds! That early storm really did set the bar to high to start the season. Wake me up when December starts! Noticed we just passed the Nov 2000 storm anniversary. The original “The November Storm”. Pretty neat video from some guys running around downtown. Really this is some of the only raw video available from that storm. They have a few incorrect factoids but otherwise a great video. . -

As a few are talking about what portion of our snow comes from lake effect I saw one of the local mets talking about this last week. According to her numbers Buffalo only gets 34% of its annual snowfall from lake effect. Thoughts? I have no idea where she is pulling this data from but that number seems low to me... . -

No... Erie had the airport parking lot attendants taking the measurements on their lunch breaks. They just tossed some snow boards down in a grassy area on the edge of the parking lot and told them to drop a yard stick at set times during the day. When the local TV station came to interview them after their “record” storm and they explained how they were measuring that’s when the NWS investigated the record and deemed it to not be record breaking due to observer error. That whole thing was such a joke. . -

Dec 2001 was basically the same thing. 82” at KBUF over 5 days. So a little longer of a storm but not by much. Holds the #2 and #4 top 24 hour snowfall records. 35.4” on 12/27-12/28 and 25.2 on 12/24-12/25. Huge snowfall but with the storm hitting right after Christmas the public impact was extremely minimal when compared to Nov 2014. . -

Meh kinda quite for a while so here’s a couple more photos that popped up on my face book memories today. Day 2 and my accomplishment was getting half my driveway cleared, finding my wife’s car and shoveling a path out to the middle of the street... even if it didn’t lead to anywhere just yet... . -

Thoughts on Thursday PM into Friday AM? NWS is factoring the marginal temps and only calling for an inch in BUF when the SW flow sets up but the hi res models are all putting together a somewhat decent looking band to meander around the metro for a few hours and a possible narrow bullseye of a few inches? P type could end up being an issue but maybe something to watch? Transition Zone special on the ARW! . -

Nice shot of one of the lake bands from Ch2 tower cam over downtown this morning. Love the cloud bands this time of year! . -

Anyone around BUF take any measurements lately? I just did an 8pm stick and have 5.2” on my board. Seems high to me but with a NE wind I have no exposure to drifting in the yard so maybe just the fact it’s been able to accumulate on the board all day and not melting? . -

First flakes of the season! Officially in the mood now! After today’s coating of slush looks like our next time to watch at least in the metro area will be Saturday AM. Winds will back to the W and then SW and might give us a couple hour window to see a band form over Lake Erie and swing north through the city. Probably won’t amount to anything but at least something to keep an eye on. . -

Yeah that’s my let down with what they are advertising. We’ve gone how many weeks with system after system pulling up through the lakes with rain, wind, lake effect rain now we are going to quick transition into possible record cold temperatures and the systems just vanish. Sure there are some fronts swinging through that will likely get everyone at least some snow but what a waste this early in the year to have the cold sink down to us but have nothing there to set the lake effect off. Geez next week looking at the GFS we would have 850s heading toward -20 over lakes that will still be at roughly 10 just sitting idle under a dome of high pressure. . -

Just had thunder and lightning here. Few bouts of grauple starting to come down. If we can hold this flow I would expect to see changeover to snow starting to pull back towards the lake plain by midnight. . -

That was definitely one of the more damaging wind storms we have seen in a while. Trees and power lines down on almost every street here. The lake shore flooding down in Hamburg looked pretty wild. The seiche got so high it even backed the Buffalo River up into the first ward and several homes had to be evacuated. Lots of large trees into homes surprised no one was hurt or killed. Also saw that two sections of the inner harbor break wall were washed away. Just crazy. . -

Going to be a noisy night that’s for sure. BUF already gusting to 53mph last hour and winds aren’t forecasted to peak for another 5 hours. Got caught off guard taking the kids out trick or treating earlier tonight those winds just blew up out of no where. Was thinking it would be a build up behind the front when it passed at 7 but it was like a wall. Had to book it back home. -

Storm this past winter was Feb 24. Port Colborne gusted to 79mph. Can anyone who has Euro access see how deep it bombs out this storm once it’s up over Ontario? Has it down sub 980 over northern Michigan in the cheap skate version. But yeah if we see winds like that with trees still mostly full in the lake plains on top of some very wet soil with all the recent rain will be some big problems. .
