One thing for certain, your enthusiasm always keeps me hopeful.

With setups like this, i always think we have a chance. Didn't someone once say, systems like this always move north? whats 50-100 miles among friends right? :snowing:

He's a great asset to our forum. His enthusiasm is genuine and i for one appreciate how many times he's lifted my spirits.

As I said last night I'd be surprised if we don't get something out of this. My wife's trip to NC is likely going to get cancelled because regardless of what happens here the high country of NC is looking primed for a pummeling. So with that, we might as well join in on the fun as well.

It seems like the cold is taking it's time moving in. Still didn't make it below freezing last night.

421 should be okay as you travel off I77. However, depending not he depth of this storm, the counties 421 runs through might have a time keeping up with the totals that "could" fall. The sooner she gets down the better on Saturday.

I would want to arrive before sunset Saturday, though an hour or two after sunset would probably be ok. Timing isn't nailed down yet, but the heavier stuff seems to start Saturday night through Sunday and possibly the first half of Monday. There are bridges and significant elevation gain between Wilkesboro and Boone (the last 45 minutes of the drive).

Thanks a lot! Good luck down there. :)

  3. Good morning everyone. My wife and daughters will be driving from Central PA to Boone this weekend. They'll be coming down I-77 and then I think it's 421 from there all the way into Boone. What is 421 like in winter events? Is this a route that is usually kept pretty clear? Also...as of right now, what does the timing look like for onset of the steadiest snow?

I'm trying to figure out if and when it would be best for her to travel. It's just about 500 miles from up here and i'm hoping to maximize her mileage in good weather.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out with advice. I appreciate it!

Yes, we see this roller coaster with most east coast storms. Many of our better storms over the years have gone through these weather model ups & downs, before ending up delivering the snow.

I think this is far from over, especially for those of us south of I -80.

The 18z GFS & GEFS were a step in the right direction.

I agree with you...I'd be somewhat surprised if at least some snow doesn't sneak into southern PA.

Now you know why I am the way I am wrt snowstorms. I'm the one doing that kind of driving in a 70' long vehicle that weighs up to 80,000 lbs and bends 1/4 of the way back. Snow and ice are extremely dangerous and nerve wracking conditions for me.

Yeah...I get it for sure. I HATE rooting against snow. I feel like a trader. Hopefully there's a way we can score and she can get down their safely.

  6. I've never rooted against snow in my 53 years but I am for for next weekend. My wife and daughters are leaving Sunday morning for a little 500 mile trip to the high country of North Carolina. At the very least I  hope the timing is delayed...though I realize that hurts our snow chances big time.

I'll be much quieter than normal for this go round as the last thing I want to be is a wet blanket.

  7. This is Eric's sense for late next week. He doesn't sound very enthused...

Late next week is nebulous...but Arctic air will be building to the north as another Pacific storm crosses the country. Given a bit of a downstream blocking pattern, you could make the case for a possible snow event around December 8th. However, without any blocking....a track up the OH Valley is more likely, meaning rain or a wintry mix changing to rain.

Harrisburg, State College and Williamsport are now all in the 2nd wettest year on record. State College will become number 1 this week probably. HBG and Williamsport probably don’t make it to 1 but damn it’s been wet.

LNS is less than 3" away from the all time record as well.

Need some advice. I’m headed to State College tomorrow morning for the game. Worried about conditions on the way up on 322. I’m in York. When would be a safe time to leave so we avoid the worst of the freezing rain?

I just logged on and saw no one answered you. I would leave early...like by 7am. All grass lots are closed tomorrow so parking will be tough and you'll likely need to walk or shuttle in from town. It leaves you with a lot of time to kill but at least you'll be there safe, parked, and settled in. All parking lots that are open will be available at 8am. Shop in town and go to the BJC to warm up and check out what is going on in there.

Best part about this storm was that everyone in this forum cashed in! It’s been a long time since we could say that about a storm. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come this winter.

Truth! I'm trying to recall a storm where virtually the entire subforum received a 6"-12" snowfall. Doesn't happen often for sure.

11.5” is the storm total at the Walker Building. By far the biggest storm I’ve ever seen in November and biggest I’ve seen in State College, wow.

State College has been shafted repeatedly for years. Glad to see Happy Valley get smoked this time!
