Would this be the first strong Niño that wasn't a complete ratter but wasn't great either? All the ones the last 44 years or so have been either one or the other...except for 1992 I believe...and while that was a moderate, of course that was after Pinatubo...

We’ve had 1 minor and (potentially) 2 major SSWs and they’ve all been weird with bottom-up and top-down connections. I said before this winter that I think people will write papers about this winter and I’m fully confident of that now.
Y'all don't think that...it may have been the volcano? I mean I know some kinda laughed that off, but now I'm starting to wonder. I mean we'd never had that much water vapor, right? So we didn't know the effects...but because it looks so weird, now I'm wondering!

ICON took a modest jump north. Still very wet. 4-6” DC north
Now that would be pretty sweet.

Hey @Maestrobjwa, thanks for sharing this!! I had heard it was the 100th anniversary of that amazing piece! I had the opportunity to see this performed live many years ago by the Atlanta Symphony (when I lived there)...and it was played on a midnight-blue piano (can't remember who did the honors in that performance!).
Wow! Ya know, while I usually don't care for funny-colored pianos...that there sounds like it was awesome! But yeah man right now, I've got Gershwin comin' out of my ears--a theater group I've been playing for is having a fundraiser concert the first weekend in March, and it's "Gershwin & Friends" (the "friends bejng a few others from that era like Baltimore's own Eubie Blake! I appreciate Gershwin even more now! (As "Fascinating Rhythms" plays in my head, lol)

I would kill for the rain snow line to be that far south.
I mean...it might. We haven't seen guidance tick north in a few runs. Plus the cold air is kinda chasing this system...just my amateur opinion.

We just gotta set our expectations right now. A big, phased up solution isn't happening. Get it out of your head now. Be reasonable...2 to 4 is our goal...4 to 6 is upside. If you realize this, we could have some real fun tracking. So to summarize...the goal is 2 to 4. If that ain't good enough for you, bye. Don't come in here shitting up this thread.
I apologize for that.

The 1960's were a -PDO, 2017-2019 were a positive PDO, the PDO alone is not an excuse for what is happening recently.
Question: Do you think whatever caused the blocking to be unstable this winter is the same thing that's afflicted us the last decade? (I mean we frickin' roller coastered from deeply negative to deeply positive and back again...what the actual heck?) I've heard folks on here mention things "destructively interfering with the niño". Now I'm jot gonna pretend to understand that, but I'm wondering if all the problems in historically favorable regimes can be traced back to uh...the one thing.

Honestly, we can't do a whole lot worse than this winter. It'll be warm/wet cold/dry, but maybe the cold will actually be cold.
We can't? Let me re-introduce you to last winter! Now THAT would be difficult to top.

Ah so that's what "catching strays" feels like, lolol

Ah, there's the hostility again. But why repeat yourself, good or bad? It's been said and now it's just variations on a theme. I don't disagree with what you're saying. You've been acting with a undertone of anger the past few weeks, and it just seems to me like your upsetting yourself more than anyone else. Maybe I read the room wrong.
I have no intention of putting you on ignore. That function is for trolls like ji or manic depressives like maestro. I greatly enjoy your analysis, even if it becomes a little repetitive. But maybe it is time to adjust expectations in a big way, for all of us. I had hopes this kind of change would wait till I was a old man, but the planet seems to have other plans...
I've said my piece, maybe I shouldn't have wasted the time to begin with, because I meant no disrespect or offence, so for that I apologize. I'll go back to lurking. ..

How can you say you meant no offense or disrespect and then call me manic depressive? Do you have any idea how hurtful that is folks thar suffer with mental illness? That, sir, is part of the stigma. It is difficult enough with folks making fun of it.

Making fun of mental health is not helpful and is actually hurtful to those suffering with it. And for the record...I am not manic depressive.

Well yeah I mean it this threat could've been bigger had we been able to get more phasing...(and if the cold wasn't chasing it). Felt like that was our PD3 chance sliding by...

It's odd that no one complains when I say how good the pattern looks over and over again when it does in fact look good. Analysis is analysis. When something is good I say it. When something is bad I say it. I don't blow smoke. I don't stick my head in the sand. And I call em like I see em. Don't like it, put me on ignore and don't read my posts. I won't be offended.
Ehh it's not odd. It's depressing snow news and folks have their reactions and just have to deal with bad news their own way. It's ain't you, lol Just a classic "Don't shoot the messenger".
Bottom line is we're all gonna have to find a way to live with whatever the new reality is...I mean, what else can we do? I still think after some more time we'll kinda get used to it and be that much more appreciative of what we get. Just gotta let go of the loftier snow notions, it seems...

Well this one certainly could've been one had the waves timed up better and phased more, right?
