  1. Recent runs of the globals say those historically cold analogs like Jan 1977 may have been on to something.
  2. IAD picked up another 6.3” on 1/30, after the surprise snow the previous week.
  3. Dulles has had 18 January storms of 6”+ since 1964. Eight of those came in 4 winters (2 each in 1966, 1987, 1996 and 2000.)
  4. Then some front end action from an OV low on the 7th followed by freezing temperatures down to central FL. Good start to what looks like a wintry January.
  5. 13° now, on the way to a forecast low of 10.
  6. High temp was 31. Dropping like a rock now with ideal radiational cooling conditions. Down to 22.
  7. A few flurries are blowing around this morning. This is the ninth day this month with some amount of flakes here.
  8. That’s more than double the amount of the annual record for Savannah, GA.
  9. Several of those analogs had historic cold snaps in the Mid-Atlantic. January 1970, 1977, 1981 (along with 1985.)
  10. It’s been a nice start to winter here. MRB is -2.6° for the month with only a few mild days so far. Should be at about -3.5° heading into Christmas Eve. Precip has been above normal and it’s already snowed a couple of inches. Happy to see the moisture showing up after such a dry year.
  11. Snow showers for the last 30 minutes, with good enough rates to put down a decent dusting, even with a temp of 34°.
  12. Some grains of snow are beginning to reach the ground here. 34°.
  13. I’m liking this from LWX’s afternoon discussion: Notably, 12z guidance has begun to hint at a local maximum 12z to 18z Friday for portions of the eastern WV panhandle and western MD especially. Most likely totals during that period for there would be up to 1.5". There is still some spread in the guidance regarding this feature.
  14. Berkeley County where I live closed schools for tomorrow.
  15. Moderate snow has resumed. Cold is really hanging tough here. Still 30°.
  16. Over performer here. Just about 2” on the ground. Interested to see what that next batch does. 31°
  17. Same here. Better rates too, which is allowing the ground to whiten nicely now. 32 degrees.
  18. Barometric pressure is about as high as we ever see. 30.80”+ for the entire region.
  19. 00Z 3k NAM holds onto 850’s a couple of hours longer than 18Z did here in the WV panhandle.
  20. 3 feet at Atlantic City and still snowing
  21. 1.25” and still pouring here. Barometer seems to have bottomed out now at 1000mb. Winds should pick up soon.
