Made it to 44° this afternoon. MRB was -2.8 for the month before today. That negative departure is gonna take a beating the last 4 days of the month, but we should end up -0.5 to -1.0.
Snowfall in January is a pretty good bet. IAD has had 1 season in the past 50 years without measurable snow in January (2023). At BWI it has happened twice (2006, 2023). Even DCA has had some kind of accumulation in 45 of the past 50 years.
I mentioned it the other day, but that early January 1970 cold snap was really frigid. I have some great memories of sledding on snow as hard as concrete.
Here was the peak of it at BWI
December 1963 is on that list too and finished around -10 for the month.
Then some front end action from an OV low on the 7th followed by freezing temperatures down to central FL. Good start to what looks like a wintry January.
It’s been a nice start to winter here. MRB is -2.6° for the month with only a few mild days so far. Should be at about -3.5° heading into Christmas Eve. Precip has been above normal and it’s already snowed a couple of inches. Happy to see the moisture showing up after such a dry year.
I’m liking this from LWX’s afternoon discussion:
Notably, 12z guidance has begun to hint at a local maximum 12z
to 18z Friday for portions of the eastern WV panhandle and
western MD especially. Most likely totals during that period for
there would be up to 1.5". There is still some spread in the
guidance regarding this feature.
