Impressive...beating out 1976-77 and 1977-78. Of course those were the MDW days...but ORD was 19.0º in 76-77 and 18.9º in 77-78, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Coldest December-March Period in Chicago History

CHICAGO:

THE IMPRESSIVE COLD THIS PAST WINTER CONTINUED DURING

MARCH...WITH A MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF ONLY 31.7 DEGREES

FOR THE MONTH. THIS RANKS AS THE 19TH COLDEST MARCH ON RECORD IN

CHICAGO. HOWEVER...OF EVEN MORE INTEREST IS THE FACT THAT WITH THE

ABNORMALLY COLD MARCH ACROSS THE AREA...THIS MADE THE AVERAGE

TEMPERATURE FOR THE DECEMBER THROUGH MARCH PERIOD IN CHICAGO 22.0

DEGREES...WHICH IS THE COLDEST SUCH PERIOD ON RECORD FOR CHICAGO

DATING BACK TO 1872!

HERE IS A LIST OF THIS YEARS DECEMBER THROUGH MARCH AVERAGE

TEMPERATURE RELATED TO THE OTHER COLDEST SUCH PERIODS ON RECORD

IN CHICAGO:

Something I noticed this morning, but it looks like LOT averages the December-January-February mean temperatures to come up with the met winter mean temperature. I'm not sure if that's the official way of doing things, but an average of all the days in met winter, Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, seems to be the "better" way of doing it to me...considering February generally has three fewer days. I did see this is the method that MKX uses to calculate winter/season mean temps. I went back and re-did the Chicago winter mean temps using the average of all days method, and this winter would be the 4th coldest on record...instead of the 3rd coldest. The Dec-Mar coldest on record still stands, again using the average of all days. Maybe RCNYILWX can fill me in on what the correct or official way is of doing these calculations.

December-February ranking (average of all days)

1) 18.0º in 1903-04

2) 18.4º in 1978-79

3) 18.7º in 1976-77

4) 18.8º in 2013-14

5) 18.9º in 1892-93

December-February ranking (average of DJF monthly mean temps)

1) 18.3º in 1903-04

2) 18.4º in 1978-79

3) 18.8º in 2013-14

4) 19.0º in 1976-77

4) 19.0º in 1892-93

December-March ranking (average of all days)

1) 22.1º in 2013-14

2) 22.3º in 1903-04

3) 22.6º in 1977-78

3) 22.6º in 1892-93

5) 22.8º in 1978-79

December-March ranking (average of DJFM monthly mean temps)

1) 22.0º in 2013-14

2) 22.3º in 1903-04

3) 22.5º in 1977-78

3) 22.5º in 1892-93

5) 22.7º in 1978-79

And yes, I know I'm a nerd...but I'm genuinely curious about the above.

In the case of 1976-77, instead of adding 22.0, 10.1, 27.0, and then dividing by three (gives you 19.0)...doesn't it make more sense to add all of the max and min temps from December 1, 1976 to February 28, 1977 and then divide by 180 (which spits out 18.7)?

I used this site to get the numbers: http://climodtest.nrcc.cornell.edu

Screen shot below, which you can see has two ways of calculating the seasonal mean temperature.
