Tornado hits largest city in New Zealand

Recommended Posts

Legit EF-2 it seems like.

So did the LCL look really low in that video? What was the setup?

A somewhat interesting read from their Metservice...

Although they seem to have more questions than answers. They also don't go into detail on the synoptic and mesoscale environment. The radar images they posted are very coarse as well.

I'm guessing a fairly high CAPE day, with localized helicity (not well captured on the balloon sounding) along the trough, which may have been a warm front, with a shift from Northeast winds to Northwest winds.

Amateur guess.

Warm fronts can provide surprise tornadoes. And, like you said, a warm front down there would produce a Northerly wind, unlike our part of the world.

Sweet thats some pretty good footage right there, looks like it moved that truck a good distance I think winds were upper end EF2 on our scale with this thing.

I'd say it was EF4...not sure why it hasn't been upgraded yet. lol

LOL the New Zealand met office said top speeds 125, thats what I based the EF2 on. There are a few photos that show cars pretty smashed up and now they are warning there may be more
