It’s been a while since we’ve had a Great Atlantic Hurricane or LI Express type powerful storm chug up the coast right in the pocket offshore NJ. What was the last major storm like that in the area, Bob despite being further east? I’m struggling to recall other recent storms with similar tracks and decent intensity.

Would be “fun” to track and experience, but would certainly do a lot of damage nowadays.

And wasn’t there a powerful fast moving potential ~ cat 4 that barreled right up along the western border of NJ in the early 1800’s? Remember reading about that one. Wonder if modern SST’s would modulate the likelihood of another event like that. IIRC it was able to retain such intensity due to unusually fast forward speed.

Sandy was so unusual in how a lot of us were in the right front quadrant for a change.

The last hurricane to take a path up the east coast and strike Long Island was Gloria in 1985. Since then tropical storms have made similar paths but none were classified as hurricanes when they hit our area.

The next 8 days are averaging  75(67/83) or +6.

    Reached 76 here yesterday.

Today:  77-82, wind mostly n., cloudy, rain after 6pm?, 70 tomorrow AM.

69*(99%RH) here at 7am, variable fog.     71* at 8am and most fog gone.

During the Major Crime Incident this AM{woman drowned her 3 kids apparently---at W. 35th St.} a score of FD/PD/EMS units were running around Surf Ave.---in and out of the fog.

    +6 seems high

  3. Beautiful day at Tobay Beach today. Very comfortable with temps in the 70s to near 80. I will say, this is one long stretch of boring weather. I know it is boring when I was following last weeks rain like it was a snow event.

You are in Levittown, correct? I can’t be much more than 3 miles south of you and only got .46.

I got 1/2 my total from a heavy shower, last night, that I was on the southern fringe of. It looked like south of Hempstead Turnpike got nothing from that shower. Another recording station on weatherlink that is about 2 miles to my north is now up to 1.87 inches. They got twice as much as me from that one heavy shower.

  5. There were a couple of heavy showers that hit Nassau during the night in the East Meadow, Hicksville and parts of Levittown. Also up around Syosset over toward Huntington. I was on the southern end of one of them and picked up .61 so far. Meanwhile just a few miles away there has been very little rain.

  6. I picked up .58 inch of rain from a small cell that was over my area and just to my north. Hicksville picked up about an inch and places just to there north and just to my south are still at close to 0 with rainfall from this event. I got lucky and was just on the southern fringe of that little heavy rain band.

  7. I am hoping and believing, at this point, this will be one of the many instances where it takes seemingly forever for the precipitation to finally make it eastward enough to reach Long Island but when it finally does we get our fair share.
