  1. Wow, sad I just saw this!! I have an enormous silver maple in my back yard. It’s currently 14’ in circumference. It’s survived major nor’easters and several hurricanes here on the south shore of Long Island. The key to its survival (it was lifting up sections of my lawn during sandy) is cabling and pruning. Every 5 years or so it’s climbed and pruned. As big as my tree is, by far the biggest tree I have found on the south shore is a cottonwood. Its easily over 100’ tall and 25’ in diameter. I have to get over and officially measure it. Here’s a pic of my silver maple
  2. Steady light rain currently in wantagh despite zero rain forecast and not much on the radar.
  3. Wow, happy amx is back. Today was the quintessential early fall day! Should be an interesting week in the Atlantic.
  4. Of the tropical cyclones I have experienced and actually remember that one was definitely no big deal. A few branches down here and there. Bob and Floyd were much more impactful on the island despite similar reported wind speeds (Nassau county). Both of those where pretty tame compared to Irene obviously which had pretty much the same type of damage from wind and surge as Gloria. And then sandy of course was a whole level of magnitude greater.
  5. Really? I guess the Jeff Spicoli thing will never die. Personally I enjoyed the sensation of gliding over the water at a speed not normally associated with New York. How’s that?
  6. Getting one last downpour here on the uws. 1.77” at the Manhattan meso. Only .7” in wantagh
  7. It’s been pouring for the better part of 2 hours on the uws. Definitely getting a good soaking here
  8. I hope for your sake you do not have Children then. The point of no return looms and the solutions in the future will be incredibly costly as future generations try to reverse our mess.
  9. Some very loud thunder here on the uws but I’m just north of all the heavy precip.
  10. Looks like that line of heavy rain is aimed right at the south shore of the island.
  11. Strong southerly winds right now in wantagh. A few breaks of sun which I assume are helping mix down the stronger winds
  12. You had feb 15 which was well below normal other then that it’s been mainly above. I’m sure unc has the stats
  13. I think we need some parameters. Just “nor’easter” is too broad.
  14. We have had how many below normal months in the last 5 years? I’ll give you a hint it’s less then 10 of 60. Even in an above normal tempeture regime there are periods of below normal days. If this board “makes you laugh” then why bother reading/posting?
  15. You just have to look at the Wrightsville Beach surge. Far far lower then hazel. Another factor that hasn’t received much attention is the limited population affected. The big population centers in North Carolina are well inland unlike further up the coast. Take Charlotte or Raleigh and place them where Wilmington is and you have a whole other animal
  16. I tend to agree this fall is well above normal. I do believe we see above normal snow this winter but most of it falling in a few big events. Overall it’s mostly a wall to wall torch
  17. Based on the current radar it looks like the heaviest rain amounts could be on the SE Side with convection. The rain shield with the remnant low looks to be more strataform type rains. So despite the fact that areas to our north may have more widespread moderate totals we could see isolated higher amounts here.
  18. Should be a great sunset with all the high cirrus from Florence
  19. My question is, why are people A. Outside B. Driving? In legit hurricane conditions?
  20. I couldn’t agree more. This thread made me cringe then puke in my mouth. Anyone we thinks this storm did not live up to the hype has no understand of meteorology and really should read more and post less. Almost doubling a states previous record for rainfall in a single tropical cyclone. Easily a 1000 year event.
  21. One of the best of the entire summer. Swell from Florence has dissipated and has now been replaced with long period swell from Helene.
  22. That’s pretty incredible. I would have to assume it was a great white. That’s a game changer for those beaches.
  23. Funny, just came back out here. But then again I’m only 3 miles to your west. Today has major erosion issues. A new inlet almost formed during sandy between today and Gilgo where there had been one historically. Robert Moses had 3 inlets filled to create ocean parkway. One at zacks bay one there and one between gilgo and cedar beach. The entire island surrounding the parkway was raised to 14’. ’
  24. A couple of live oaks down which is impressive. But one of those is a silver maple which just shouldn’t be planted in hurricane prone areas. Their older tree stock made it through that 135mph gust and plenty of other hurricanes. A 105mph gust would cause major tree damage up here just like 38 and carol.
