So I've read, though they divebomb my gray-white head just as enthusiastically as they did when my hair was still brown.  They also seem to key on movement, which I discovered by accident while in the woods west of Jackman on a mega-deerfly July day.  My co-worker needed a serious comfort stop and headed into the thicker growth while I waited by a bridge over Turner Brook.  The watercourse as full of little trout and I decided that the deerflies would at least provide some entertainment along with torture.  As I waited, ready to slap, drop, and watch the feeding frenzy, the deerflies left me completely alone.  Their attention returned as we continued our walk back to the truck.  I've since found that standing still causes most deerflies to lose interest - maybe they're like T-Rex as portrayed in Jurassic Park.  (And scaled to their body size, their dental equipment feels like it's similar.)

    lol.  They really do suck.

Deer flies are out now. There was virtually no break between the end of the black flies and the start of the deer flies. The latter seems to be much more aggressive on warm humid days with ample sunshine than on the cooler days. They were awful on Sunday and Monday but have been much less of a pest the past couple of days. I only had one come at me while working outdoors today. They are nasty, totally ignorant of deet and they'll bite right through your shirt.

Can anyone ID this tree? I thought it was a yellow birch at first since the bark isn't that much different from it, but it's clearly not with the pinnate leaves and sawtoothed leaflets. I know it's a little hard to see in the 2nd photo, but it has white flowers higher up. There are several of them on the property and on the roadside. I've only seen them above about 2K elevation.

Is it an Aspen?  Those trees totally suck.  They've got a huge root system so if you cut it down, it springs up a sh*tload more of them all over the place.

     OK, here are the details:

I was driving the work van down Green River Road which becomes Plain Road at approximately 5:20 PM.   I had just stopped home to make sure Windows were closed and dogs were OK.  The worst of the storm had seem to have passed since rain and lightened up and sky was brightening.   So I began my trip south to Northampton for a work event.   Less than a mile from my house the rain became very intense and very quickly and the wind started howling with a lot of small tree debris flying about.

I started to think about pulling over because it was sideways zero visibility rain and wind.   I was coming to a break in the residential area where the farm fields were and all of a sudden I saw the tent at the pick your own strawberry fields  crumple and roll away.  Just as I thought "oh sh*t,  Time to pull over"  all of the trees in front of me started to bow  and a huge branch hit my windshield as I watched a tree ripped out of the ground.   Next thing I know a utility pole is swinging towards my head and I  jerk the wheel hard left.  The van went over a small embankment and felt like it was going to tip but landed upright.   At this point I took a quick breath,  shook the glass out of my hair and clothes and saw the powerlines right over my head and drove another 20 or 30 feet into the field.

A pick up truck that was behind me pulled up next to me  in the field and asked if I was OK and then told me to keep driving away from the powerlines if I could.

Ironically power is now out until morning for the entire neighborhood from the tree and pole that almost took me out.

Wow, Chris--scary stuff.  You've got quite a tale to tell for years to come--with pictures to back it up!

Quite the dousing of rain.  If nothing else, the ground's got some water to keep things green for a bit.

Ever had Gifford's?  (preferably at one of their Maine stores)

Still mostly overcast at Augusta.  Dews are rising but it will take a real blast to approach 90 here.  At home had 0.03" before 7 from the warm front, with some more colorful echoes to the north.

    Gifford's rocks.

Got up to 82.3 earlier.  Lots of clouds now, 80.6.  Muggy though.
