Sign me up. That was an epic 15 minutes.
Best part was how it moved under the radar while crossing central Pennsylvania and many posters thought it had dissipated. That really was crazy.

Bust for me. I am under a WWA for 3-6” of snow and ended up with 1/4” of snow. Just sleet here now.
Did you get icing?

But nothing as significant as our big events like Jan 94 when temps were in the 20’s.
In January of ‘78 the temperature hovered around 28 with a low level flow coming from the north. This drained cold air down the Hudson Valley from Upstate NY. Rainfall rates were quite heavy resulting in tremendous icing on the north shore.

This storm bust for alot of areas
Ant - that depends on how you define a bust. It’s true that there was no snow in the region but anyone who followed the models knew that this was not likely to produce much if any snow anyways. We all know that with this type of pattern the mid levels tend to torch fairly quickly and this does not appear to have been any different. Where it overperformed was the strength of the low level cold air advection along the coast. Freezing rain was reported at the NWS reporting stations on LI during much of the night. This included along many parts of the south shore especially in Suffolk. I have a station out on Fire Island and the wind direction sensor was stuck between 2am and 6 am. If I am correct then that means that rain was freezing on some surfaces even out there during that time period. Temperatures during that period were at or near freezing.

Downed trees and wires in PA from the heavy icing.
Plenty of icing out here. Trees are laying on power lines in many areas due to the ice. Strange thing in my local area the roads have not been affected. Icing events are fairly common here in any case and this one falls within the range of other recent events. Accretion here looks to be about 0.15”. Temperature is at 32. Local schools are open. Districts in some rural areas have delayed openings or are closed.

Still 31 out here in Bethlehem PA with freezing rain.

Still holding at 32 at my station on Fire Island. NWS stations all reporting freezing rain on LI. No WWA from Upton. Yup.

In their latest discussion they expect Temps to rise

Temp has actually dropped a full degree out there since 12:30 am. Cold air can actually hold in pretty tight out in eastern LI in these situations. Just rare to see this in mid December.

How about that. All sleet here 32, coating now.
I am at 31.8 out here in Bethlehem PA with freezing rain.
I have a station on Fire Island that is also at 31.8. I don’t know about the precip type. Reports of frozen precip at the NWS sites in Suffolk Cty.
WWA from Upton for Suffolk?? So far only a SWS.

That’s great info thanks.
Does your station have a website?
It’s on Weather Underground.

Here’s something for you guys on the island and the city to ponder. I know that there have been reports of sleet in many areas out there. I have a station right on Fire Island. Temp / Dew is 33/29 now with a light East wind. No sign of any warm air rushing in off the ocean so you may hold on to the frozen precip mix for a little longer than you might think.

we have gotten so spoiled in the 2000s and 2010s on long island, that last winter really was a bummer...I hope this is not one of those winters where LI is the rain snow line, that would be disappointing
I lived out there during the 70s and 80s and yes that is what you got. As they say the good times don’t last. The flip side is it is only December and there is plenty of winter left.

That's all virga. The moisture is still south of a line from reading PA to Philadelphia

All NWS reporting stations in eastern PA are reporting cloudy skies without any precipitation as of 4pm. I saw a brief period of light snow during the midday hour and that has been it with the exception of some very light snow grains from time to time.

Depending how heavy this initial shot comes in it’s possible there could be a surprising 2-3 hour period of snow in the area. If it’s not heavy I’m not sure it’ll overcome the possible mid level warming
Steady light snow has broken out here. 33*

Yes it's cold and you saw the Bethleham PA report. Note also...not sure how many here use mPING but it's a valuable CROWD SOURCING opportunity. I'll be mpinging as we go through so many changes the next 24 hours. Already mPING reports confirm Bethleham on the Radarscope app I use. You may be seeing mPING reports elsewhere?? (Pleaser let me know if you do see mPING reports elsewhere). Thanks and enjoy this messy winter storm. As Highland Lakes posted...we are quite cold with overcast skies nd northeast breeze here at 740' elevation. 21F. 708AM/1
Thanks for the heads up on this app. There is now an additional user of mPing in Bethlehem.
