  1. Just had some light flurries in Germantown. I thought "what the heck" because the sun was out with mostly clear skies out my window looking south. A cloud just floated overhead and dropped some flakes.
  2. Very nice! I have a couple chrysalises that will hatch in a few days. We are getting to the time when I will start finding them on the fence, house siding, etc. I am definitely doing the dill, fennel and parsley next summer.
  3. I've been thinking of adding dill, fennel and parsley to my butterfly garden for black swallowtails but haven't tried it yet. I get lots of Monarch caterpillars with the tropical milkweed, and all kinds of butterflies nectar on that stuff. Hummingbirds love it too. Have you seen any black swallowtail caterpillars on the herbs?
  4. At work in DC a few blocks from Union Station and barely missed the nice-looking cell to my north. Looks like lots of lightning on Radarscope with it. DARN!
  5. I remember hearing about people on I-70 getting caught from behind by that derecho because it was moving so fast. That is crazy.
  6. Hope everyone is staying safe amid all the severe weather and flooding. Remain vigilant!
  7. Alright sun coming back out and it's 77/66. Need to build up come instability.
  8. Wasn't expecting overcast and light rain at mid-day. Does this impeded severe chances for later today? I am coming out from under my weather blocking shield and going to Gaithersburg for dinner, and am hoping to see a thunderstorm.
  9. Nice video ge0 - thanks for posting! Hard to believe that's so close -- I am just N of the intersection of 355 and Rt 27 and got 0.15 of rain and nothing else. Clarksburg just as close to my north got a strong storm too. This spot and Stephens City are uncanny.
  10. Are you there? What part? I am 2 mile NE Germantown in the Milestone area, and have whiffed on everything again. Saw purple on radar 2-3 miles north from one cell, then 2 miles south with this one. Got nothing more than a brief shower. I'm curious to know what those storms were like in Germantown and Gaithersburg - they looked wild on radar.
  11. My bar is 0.3 of rain. Anything else, lightning etc., is gravy.
  12. Missed both rounds, got about 0.1 from a light shower. Just 0.6 since May 13.
  13. Well that escalated quickly. Nice looking hook on that storm in FredCo.
  14. Just drove from Calvert back to Germantown and saw quite the lightning show to the N and E. Not a drop for the drive though. While in Calvert this afternoon, I watched three storms train just 2-4 miles north of us over about an hour. It was nice because we were able to sit out and enjoy mid 70s and a breeze instead of 90 like we had dreaded. When we drove through Dunkirk (northern Calvert) on the way back, there was a thick fog hanging in the trees like a rainforest. They must have really gotten drenched.
  15. Nice thunderstorm in Germantown -- about 0.42 in 15 minutes, lots of lightning, and a brief gust to 45-50. Sun is back out and the air is fresh.
  16. Nice pictures! What's that in the fourth one? I don't see it in the third.
  17. Don't have my rain gauge out yet but man we must have gotten about 2 inches. Got the daughter and one other kid at the bus stop because it was hitting hard right then and there was some lightning. I was surprised to see how many kids had no umbrellas.
  18. LOL. A whole week of build-up to this "severe" event. Not even a single rumble of thunder.
  19. That's what I get for scheduling a delivery of six cubic yards of mulch and a landscaping crew for my gardens this Friday. Damn wedge tornado will probably suck up all my mulch.
  20. First few tiny flakes in Germantown, 38 degrees. I don't have a weather station, but nearby Gaithersburg reports 37/25 which should give us a little room to drop. The dews in VA are terrible.
  21. The great sleet storm of 2007 was one the craziest things I've ever seen. Sleet is usually a just transition precip around here and we rarely see more than a coating or half inch of the stuff. In that 2007 storm it POURED heavy sleet for hours with a loud hissing sound and sleet literally cascading off of roofs. We got like 6-7" of pure sleet which was welded together by a crust of freezing rain. You could walk on top of it without breaking through. I remember people's cars helplessly stuck because inches of ice had their tires locked in place.
  22. 5.0 total for me in the Milestone area of Germantown. Puts me at 26.5 for the winter which is incredible given the overall pattern. Radar looks like the precip is over, and I am fine with that. I did not want a bunch of freezing rain. It would be great if the rain stays away tonight. Edit to add that my parents in northern Calvert (4 miles south of Dunkirk) report only about an inch with light sleet falling. That's why I am N/W of the city!
