  1. That Kettering storm was unbelievable. I still remember the date -- July 10, 1978. The hail was tennis ball size and took out all the west-facing windows of people's houses. I remember my dad running from window to window helplessly as they shattered. Everyone got new roofs too. The Orlando storm caused $1,500 damage to my car and some neighborhoods had several inches of hail on the ground.
  2. Yikes -- Warning says trained weather spotters reported quarter sized hail in Baltimore City and the storm has since strengthened.
  3. Haha yup, and silence of loud deck party behind us. Man that was some rain though -- some yards downhill from us had rivers running thru that you could see with the lightning strikes. Best T-Storm for me in a couple years.
  4. Not quite severe but pretty intense -- very heavy rain with lots of lightning, a couple gusts to about 50, and a brief shot of small hail. I always get nervous with hail because it always starts small. I have bad memories of two monster hailstorms in Kettering, MD in 1978 and Orlando, FL in 1992.
  5. Central MoCo cell almost here -- let's see what it does. Neighbors behind us have a loud deck party going on -- they are trying to keep it going under a table umbrella. LOL we'll see...
  6. Good point about the dews. I just spent over an hour sitting out on the deck and it is very comfortable for mid 80s. It just doesn't "feel" thunderstormy.
  7. I don't care about severe but a nighttime thunderstorm loaded with lightning would be fun. That's what I'm hoping for.
  8. I'm thrilled with the 0.9 total which is more than twice what I expected. 1.2 for the month so far. Hoping for some sun to break thru this afternoon
  9. Thanks CAPE, that is excellent! I measured 0.9 and the map looks dead on. I'm amazed at the amounts so close by both west and east.
  10. What is a good site for radar estimate rain accumulations? I used to use the NWS radar but that new one...
  11. Not for my area. I had only 2.5 for May and this puts me at just over 1.0 for June so far. I'd like to see another 0.5 from this but radar looks weak.
  12. The stratiform rain saved us and we've managed a pretty good 0.7. We do OK in this kind of set-up, but cannot depend on thunderstorms. They almost always miss.
  13. Yeah nice week coming up but I wish I got decent rain before. It's been so dry here and got barely anything. Eurojoke with 2-4 inches LOL. Just as bad as it was in winter.
  14. Looks like we're done in Germandesert after a period of light rain that was maybe 0.10. It will be tough to reach the 0.3 for the week that I predicted we would total.
  15. I fully expect to be out watering my garden later this evening. We do stratiform rain at 33 in winter really well. Summer thunderstorms? NOPE
  16. Wow look how fast that small cell popped right over northern Baltimore City. Went from nothing to heavy in minutes. It's going to be hit or miss but the ones that get hit will get a lot
  17. Hmmmm, might have to try that. My butterfly garden is in the corner and weeds explode into it from two neighbors' yards since it's just a picket fence. Waiting on my 0.05 pity shower later. Sunny and 81
  18. Flash flood watch LOL. I'll be surprised if I get through this week with more than 0.3. Currently at 0.0 Looking forward to a nice weekend though and some great temps next week.
  19. Was on a call with a co-worker in the Severna Park area yesterday afternoon and could hear the thunder. Jealous! I watered my gardens heavily last night because I know what the score will be here. Meanwhile, wow is this Wes land at the tip of Calvert?
  20. Not buying those maps, even if it was in centimeters. I'll go with 0.45 for Germantown through the week.
  21. Check out Annapolis scoring an east breeze and sitting at 78 while a spot less than five miles west is at 95
  22. From our house it's mostly a distant drone of pharaohs from woods a few hundred yards away, and a few individuals closer here and there. But driving yesterday just a couple miles away the noise was suddenly astonishing at a red light, even with the windows up. I put them down and could not believe the noise. It was cassinis and they were all over a stand of big cherry trees. The hissing buzz-saw sound was unreal. I can't imagine the people that live right near that spot. Then at the next light very little noise.
  23. We know a couple of people up your way that said the same thing -- no cicadas. Same with some of my family in Calvert. Looking at this map you are close to the border of Brood X and Brood II in red -- 2013 and 2030. Looks like Calvert is Brood II
