Cloudy today with temps getting close to normal before we slip back below normal over the weekend. We begin a warming trend that should get most of us back to the low to mid 80's next week...but without oppressive humidity and comfortably cool nights. Our best rain chance will be tomorrow afternoon...but we are not holding our breath! Chester County Records for today: High 100 degrees at Phoenixville (1943) / Low 38 degrees at Coatesville 1SW (1924 / Rain 7.60" at KMQS Coatesville Airport (2008)

What is your elevation difference? I find that on calm cool mornings the higher spots like mine radiate poorly - but on mornings like yesterday with cold air advection higher spots like mine will often come in cooler....might be the same there??

Our next chance of rain comes Saturday night before clearing and turning a bit cooler again by Sunday. Chester County records for today: High 103 degrees at Phoenixville (1953) / Low 43 degrees at West Chester (1946) / Rain 3.48" at Phoenixville (1935)

This morning's low here in East Nantmeal of 48.5 degrees represents the coldest early autumn season temperature in my 21 years of weather records in the Township. The previous record was the 48.1 on September 6, 2013. The lowest temperature I could find across the County this morning was the 42.8 at Warwick Twp. Below normal temps will slowly warm back to near normal by Thursday before rain chances increase toward the weekend and we again fall back to below normal by the end of next weekend. Chester County records for today: High temperature 103 degrees at Phoenixville (1953) / Low 41 degrees also at Phoenixville (1916) / Rain 3.72" at West Chester MADIS (2012)

As today is the last day of the final full summer month it appears like we will fail to see any of the Chester County stations touch the 100 degree mark for the for the 5th straight summer. Our last 100 degree day temperature was at Phoenixville (big surprise) on July 21, 2019. The next highest temperature that day was the 95.6 at West Bradford Twp. This is the longest stretch between a century reading since the 5 years between 1996 through 2000. The longest non-100 degree stretch was the 9 straight summers between 1902 through 1910.

Some spots picked up a little rain last night and overnight. Here in East Nantmeal we picked 0.17" since last evening. Some additional showers are possible this afternoon but our best chances of rain are tomorrow night with the cold frontal passage. Temperatures today will remain below normal in the low to mid-70's. We warm to near normal both Saturday and Sunday before a sharp turn to below normal temps by Labor Day. Many of the lower spots will see low temperatures again in the 40's by Tuesday AM. High Temps for the first week of September will remain in the low to mid 70's. Chester County Records for today: High Temperature 102 degrees at Phoenixville (1953) of note both Coatesville and West Chester also both exceeded 100 degrees to close out the last 2 days of August 1953/ Low Temperature was a chilly 34 degrees at Phoenixville (1986) / Rain 5.04" at Kennett Square (1911)

Below is a bit of a busy slide but for the first time it shows all 30 NWS stations (color coded if you wish to follow your favorite station) with each stations average annual temperature history plotted individually since 1893 thru 2023. The red trend line shows the overall average of all stations. As we have shown before here in Chester County we have seen nearly flat average temperature trends over the last 130+ years.

Also I ran an analysis on Sellersville with NWS COOP data since 1949. Through yesterday they have an Average Temp of 72.9 this month. Their long term average of all years since 1949 is 73.5 degrees (0.6 degrees lower than avg.) - but of interest their average August Temp just in the most recent 30 year period is actually lower at 72.7 (only 0.2 degrees above avg.) August's seem to have cooled quite a bit in recent years at Sellersville as you can see in the trend lines since 1949!

Across all 13 NWS COOP/Airport and MADIS stations across Chester County..and also here in EN - all stations through yesterday are running between no less than 0.5 degrees below normal to as much as 2.7 degrees below normal. Below are the averages this month and the negative departure from normal for August. Atglen 71.6 (1.3) / Chester Springs 71.2 (2.2) / Devault 72.1 (1.7) / Glenmoore 71.6 (1.2) / Kennett Square 71.5 (1.5) / Longwood Gardens 72.2 (1.3) / West Bradford Twp. 71.1 (1.8) / Nottingham 71.0 (2.0) / Warwick Twp 70.3 (2.7) / West Chester 72.0 (2.1) / West Grove 72.4 (1.4) East Nantmeal 71.1 (1.5) / KMQS (Coatesville) 72.4 (0.5) / KOQN (West Chester) 74.1 (2.1) Phoenixville 73.1 (1.8) and Spring City NWS Coop site at 73.4 (1.2)

Correction RedSky - Phoenixville NWS COOP station is currently at 73.1 degrees thru yesterday their 30 year normal August is 74.9 degrees - which is actually 1.8 degrees BELOW normal for August. Even looking at their 130+ year averages they are running 0.4 degrees below normal. Also -Perkasie is at 72.0 their August Average is 72.8 - so they are also 0.8 degrees below normal this August. To further drive home the clearly below normal month at most locations.
