Things have been slower on the work front so finally had a chance to download and consolidate all 23 available Chester County climate data sites (see below table for detail). All stations have been weighted equally for all years they were reporting data . I then compared the all average temperature by decade data to the NCEI NOAA Chester County PA average temperatures reported by decade. As expected the greatest downward post observation adjustments to the data were during the warmest raw data reported decades of the 1930's and 1940's with a gradual reduction in cooling that started in the 1950's finally resulting in what are now warming adjustments during the most recent 2 decades.

Some light rain overnight with County totals including East Nantmeal 0.13" / Atglen 0.11" / Chester Springs 0.14" / Glenmoore 0.14" / Devault 0.11" / West Chester 0.12" / London Grove 0.11" and Kennett Square 0.09", Looks like some great winter weather on tap for much of the upcoming week with sunny skies and seasonably chilly but not cold temps. Below is the area climate summary for Chester County for the Month of January. Warwick Township was the chilliest and West Chester Airport the warmest. Both East Nantmeal and West Chester finished with their 34th warmest January with 131 and 132 years of data respectively. Devault finished with their 27th warmest January with 123 years of record. West Chester finished with their 3rd wettest January and East Nantmeal and Devault both finished with it's 4th such first month of the year.

Below is the area climate summary for Chester County for the Month of January. Warwick Township was the chilliest and West Chester Airport the warmest. Both East Nantmeal and West Chester finished with their 34th warmest January with 131 and 132 years of data respectively. Devault finished with their 27th warmest January with 123 years of record. West Chester finished with their 3rd wettest January and East Nantmeal and Devault both finished with it's 4th such first month of the year.

We will end our cloudy January today. I will post the East Nantmeal Twp. and combined All Chester County climate data tomorrow. However, we will end the month with a much colder January then last year with most stations across the county averaging 6 to 8 degrees colder than 2023 (of course last year was the warmest Jan on record!). We will finish January about 1" below average snowfall for the month... but it will be our 3rd snowiest January in the last 10 years and 4th wettest on record. Dry weather for much of the next week with tomorrow being our warmest day with temps well into the 40's. Records for today: High 65 (1916) / Low minus 4.8 (2019) / Precipitation 1.25" (1914) / Snow 4.3" (2021)

It is interesting watching the moisture moving westbound from the ocean...as this move inland this will become the scattered snow showers and flurries later for some...

What has been a mighty cloudy month looks to finish that way with a couple days in our future. Temps across the area while near freezing this morning are a good 10 degrees warmer than normal. The clouds will help keep our high temps not too far from normal in the upper 30's the next 2 days. We could see some light snow showers in some spots tonight but otherwise a dry seasonably chilly stretch of weather with maybe some sunshine for Thursday through the weekend for a change. Records for today: High 69 (1947) / Low minus 7 (1928) / Precipitation 1.47" (1939) / Snow 5.1 (2000)

Snow was the more predominant p-type this December/January with 10.9" of snow compared to December 1978/January 1979 when only 8.7" of the precip was snow. Of course 1996 was one of our snowiest winters with 47" of snow during December 1995/January 1996 and 27.7" during December 1977/Jan 78

With most spots seeing over an inch of rain yesterday we are now up to 7.55" of rain this month our 4th wettest January on record - so in the last 2 months we have recorded 16.32" of rain and melted snow. That is about 1/3 our normal annual precipitation. The good news it looks dry this week with seasonable temps near normal. Colder weather looks likely by next weekend. Records for today: High 69 (1947) / Low 7 below (1928) / Rain 1.46" (1990) / Snow 13.0" (1966)

Records for today: High 67 (1914) / Low 10 below zero (1925) / Precipitation 1.80" (1922) / Snow 18.0" (1922) - this was the first day of 2 day snowstorm that would deliver 26" of snow - this was the 6th largest snowstorm in county history.

Snow may begin to mix in with the rain especially in the higher spots in the area overnight Sunday into Monday AM. We should remain near to slightly above normal temps for the rest of the work week. We picked up another 0.15" of rain since midnight bringing our 3 day total to 0.61". This brings our January total to 6.28" this is the wettest January since the 7.08" that fell back in 1999. The wettest January was the 9.72" that fell back in 1979. Today and tomorrow should be mainly dry with the fog finally burning off by noon today. Today will be the warmest day (might hit 60 degrees) before we trend back close to normal by Sunday and into the new week. Rain chances increase again by Tomorrow night and should continue till Monday AM. We could see another inch or so of rain by then. We should be cold enough to see some wet snow mix in toward Monday morning but with temps staying just above freezing no accumulation. Records for today: High 75 (1950) - warmest January temperature on record / Low 1 below zero (1922) / Precipitation 1.40" (2011) / Snow 14.0" (2011)
