Being obsessed with suburban lawns is a uniquely American phenomenon. Like mom and apple pie.
I'm reasonably sure that other countries have moms, too.

Observation that I just made....anyone else notice a lack of acorns this year? I don't have a single one in my yard. I had mountains of them previously.
i barely had any this year, where last year there were shit tons of them

I was going to pull the trigger and get one but lately I've just been hiring some kids looking for work to do it.
they aren't cheap, no doubt. but I'd have to empty my tractor bagger almost every lap without it. It holds a ton of leaves, can do the whole yard with only dumping 2-3 times.

for those of us with lawn tractors, Cyclone rake is where it's at. made in CT, USA. I fire up that bad boy every weekend, because if I didn't do that every weekend, it would be a heck of a chore getting all the leaves at once. my property seems to be the place where everybody's leaves go to rot.

My leaves appear to be giving up the fight today. Falling like snow on this light breeze.

I agree with your sentiments. Even a decent pack of 12” loses its “White Christmas” luster if it’s 44F, raining with 1/4 mile thick fog and blackened snowbanks.
Sure it’s a “White Christmas” but despite a foot on the ground, there are soggy water runnels and pea soup views outside… whereas even a fresh 2-4” on grass and on every twig and branch probably achieves a better festive atmosphere with 70% less snowpack.
last year certainly lost its luster. although it was in the 40's early on xmas morning, still had snowpack. By the time I left my brothers house shortly after xmas dinner, the snowpack had been vaporized. temp of 57, DP of 56 nuked that pack in a hurry.

I love to see these big rainstorms at this time. I don’t know how true this is but I have heard that when there are big nor’easters in the fall, often times that is a good sign for winter because we are establishing a favorable storm track, and those wind driven rainstorms now will be severe nor’easters with blizzard conditions at times in the winter.
yeah that worked out great in Oct 2011

We will all be doing leaves into early Dec. Unreal how much green left on Oaks
i don't know about your oaks, but mine lose leaves steadily from late-October all the way through spring. there is nothing worse than fallen oak leaves sitting on top of a fresh snowfall.

JFC george. Enough with the blizzards. enough with the adjectives. not everything has to be severe or extreme.

Quite a few don't seem to be enjoying the present though.
it is entirely possible for a person to enjoy the warm weather, while also looking forward to winter and chances of snow.

They make a ton of money opening and closing the systems. One guy I met said he didn't have to put another system in and he could live off the ones he services.
you aren't kidding. The company that installed mine charges $65 for closing, and they are in and out in 10 mins. they can probably bang out 20-25 systems a day no problem.

well the bad man with the air compressor stopped by yesterday- no more sprinklers for the season- seems early to me but whatever.
lawn looks great- until i put a giant spiderweb/spiders on it- will try and take a pic later
i can't stand how early they winterize. no threat of a deep freeze for at least a month. i do mine myself, rent the big compressor, makes it an easy job. I just have to wait until all the contractors return the rentals-early Nov works for me.

peaking right around Columbus Day weekend should make the leaf peepers happy. traffic is going to be insane.

Hey guys- update- followed your advice...bought that green electric de-thatcher linked above- followed by fert/seed...things look fantastic. So now what's the plan for the spring?
I wanna use the crab grass stuff scott talked about...do i do a spring dethatching or anything? and i presume no seed if i use the crabgrass control.
don't dethatch in the spring, you never should. that will just open space for crabgrass to take hold. also, since you just put down grass seed, some of that seed will be sprouting next spring.
and yes, you cannot seed in the spring if you are going to use crabgrass control

leaf disaster incoming today. the wind likes to blow the oak leaves from the neighbors yards and stack them against the back of my house and my garage. good times.
