  1. Flurries here too. Trace on the cartops. Echoes do not even show on the AW radar, but a very light band shows on the NWS page radar. radar.weather.gov/station/kdix/standard
  2. Needed some sleep....or went outside for a walk....
  3. This is it! It happened early in the morning, rain to blinding snow. Gust 59 mph! Down to 11 F. I was in college. It was quite a sight. Amazing that this notebook exists. The person stayed up all night (no one does that now [eyeroll]. Does not fit today's current definition for a blizzard does it? @IrishRob17 Thanks for the reference you posted. @nycsnow
  4. Thanks so much @donsutherland1 I was always envious that my cousins near W-B got more snow than in my hometown. lol
  5. I would love to see the surface map for this one. Seems the coast changed to rain?
  6. Google it to find discussions, @Picard. There are several ways. For example, round up towards zero, round down from zero, etc. Be consistent with whatever method is chosen.
  7. I'll be watching the Raritan Bay for ice development. Hasn't had significant ice for a decade.
  8. 1979 was about a foot in central NJ. Alas, Feb 1983 was the only heavy snowstorm in this era, until March 1993 as you note. What a drought. This forum would be kaput. lol 1/19-20/1978, 16 inches here, changed to freezing drizzle which left a shiny glaze on the surface. It was a busted forecast - high; was supposed to change to rain.
  9. Yeah, you know it's bad when you can rattle off the few in that era: Jan 1978, Feb 1978, Feb 1979, Feb 1983, Jan 1996.
  10. Edit: It was: 1/19-20/1978 @Tatamy www.northshorewx.com/19780120.html Article from a LI site. ...and watching Alan Casper!
  11. Current: the "-54" is -5 for Hackettstown and -4 for nearby Mount Olive.
  12. NYCSNOW - During the winter of 1976 or 1977 there was an area-wide event dubbed the "One inch blizzard." It was exactly what they called it. You might be able to search for it.
  13. Another fun experiment is to throw a cup of boiling water into dry, frigid air. An amazing physical effect occurs. It turns into a fog of "snow," bypassing the solid state of water (ice).
  14. Daily minimum seems to have been -17 F. That is one cold spot.
  15. www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/weather-climate-models/climate-forecast-system All about the CFS, fyi. Rarely see this one cited....
  16. www.njweather.org/maps/mapviewer?mapname=temperature Impressive low temperatures as of 7:15 am in the area around Sussex County. That -37 F in Hackettstown must be an error.
  17. Speaking of Rutgers, the university closed for the first time in its long history for the Febuary 5, 1978 storm. I was a student at Cook College then.
  18. The early 1970s were horrible for snow. The winter of 1972-1973 had no measurable snow for the area south of around Middlesex County to Trenton! 1976-1977 was the bitter cold season, but with only around 25 inches of snow.
  19. Hi Tat, I remember you from the old NYC Metro forum. While reminiscing...how did you do with the great [forgotten]storm of 1978? Third week of January(?). It was a blown forecast; it was supposed to change to rain. I got 16 inches, here. Ended with a period of freezing rain/drizzle which left a shiny glaze on the surface. I wish I had a photo. Edit: It was: 1/19-20/1978 @Tatamy www.northshorewx.com/19780120.html Article from a LI site.
  20. You would have loved February 5, 1978, the great northeast blizzard of 1978. Did a loop. I got 18 inches, here.
  21. Fine. Yes, the same name, In fact, I set this account up in 2010 but never posted here. I was an active poster on NYC Metro, for years. It was founded by a few then-young guys after the "Bevans" board went nutty. NYC Metro had its day, it was like family; until it went downhill. Great posters were there, the late-Icehater; Robbbs; Tatamy, who is here; Thundersleet; and the always-fun Metfanforlife, to name a few. Many good posters here and great moderators, so I might chime in from time to time. I look to your numbers and the members in Colonia, Metuchen, and Plainfield for comparisons. FD
