  1. The brutally cold season of 1976-1977 only yielded some 25 inches in the NYC area. (24.5" in CPK.)Yes, the snowfalls lasted. lolHeavy ice formation in the waterways. Area ferry services were suspended. Averages by month, Central Park: October 1976 52.9 F (Number 10 since records kept. Got the "cold" ball rolling.)November 1976 41.7 F (The coldest November since 1917 surely further "primed" the cold waters.)December 1976 - 29.9 F (Number 9 since records kept.)January 1977 - 22.1 F (Number 2 since records kept.)February 1977 - 33.5 F @NorthShoreWx Edited.
  2. My high school buddy moved to Myrtle Beach to get away from this kind of weather. It was in the 70s there last week though.
  3. Some ice forming in the brackish water at the west end of Raritan Bay, here. A thin layer extending out 100 to 200 yards (and in the boat basin) has formed. Ice can spread rapidly once the freezing point is reached. I'll keep checking. Needs to be a long-term cold spell to get ice to form in the Raritan Bay. I haven't seen extensive ice in a decade, here.
  4. Flurries here too. Trace on the cartops. Echoes do not even show on the AW radar, but a very light band shows on the NWS page radar. radar.weather.gov/station/kdix/standard
  5. Needed some sleep....or went outside for a walk....
  6. This is it! It happened early in the morning, rain to blinding snow. Gust 59 mph! Down to 11 F. I was in college. It was quite a sight. Amazing that this notebook exists. The person stayed up all night (no one does that now [eyeroll]. Does not fit today's current definition for a blizzard does it? @IrishRob17 Thanks for the reference you posted. @nycsnow
  7. Thanks so much @donsutherland1 I was always envious that my cousins near W-B got more snow than in my hometown. lol
  8. I would love to see the surface map for this one. Seems the coast changed to rain?
  9. Google it to find discussions, @Picard. There are several ways. For example, round up towards zero, round down from zero, etc. Be consistent with whatever method is chosen.
  10. I'll be watching the Raritan Bay for ice development. Hasn't had significant ice for a decade.
  11. 1979 was about a foot in central NJ. Alas, Feb 1983 was the only heavy snowstorm in this era, until March 1993 as you note. What a drought. This forum would be kaput. lol 1/19-20/1978, 16 inches here, changed to freezing drizzle which left a shiny glaze on the surface. It was a busted forecast - high; was supposed to change to rain.
  12. Yeah, you know it's bad when you can rattle off the few in that era: Jan 1978, Feb 1978, Feb 1979, Feb 1983, Jan 1996.
  13. Edit: It was: 1/19-20/1978 @Tatamy www.northshorewx.com/19780120.html Article from a LI site. ...and watching Alan Casper!
  14. Current: the "-54" is -5 for Hackettstown and -4 for nearby Mount Olive.
  15. NYCSNOW - During the winter of 1976 or 1977 there was an area-wide event dubbed the "One inch blizzard." It was exactly what they called it. You might be able to search for it.
  16. Another fun experiment is to throw a cup of boiling water into dry, frigid air. An amazing physical effect occurs. It turns into a fog of "snow," bypassing the solid state of water (ice).
  17. Daily minimum seems to have been -17 F. That is one cold spot.
  18. www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/weather-climate-models/climate-forecast-system All about the CFS, fyi. Rarely see this one cited....
  19. www.njweather.org/maps/mapviewer?mapname=temperature Impressive low temperatures as of 7:15 am in the area around Sussex County. That -37 F in Hackettstown must be an error.
