Freezing Drizzle replied to Stormlover74's topic in New York City Metro
Yeah, since my son has lived in Philadelphia, I've been reminded of what a difference there can be. Particularly extreme because I live near the Raritan Bay. -

Thanks, guys. I know Erie is very shallow, I was just surprised at the degree of difference versus the other lakes. -

I had commented that my humidifier has been running non-stop most of this winter, just to keep the interior RH to 35% -

Here on the north NJ coast, most winters, over the decades, do not have snowfall on snow events. -

Minimums for today. Yeah, great differences. Northwest and north-central NJ was particularly cold. -

Not a snow coverage pattern that one often sees. Complete with coverage in northern Mississippi and a snow hole in Iowa. AW February 1, 2026 -

Winter cancelled/uncancelled banter 25/26

If possible, one can squirt warm water from a hose out a window to clear downspout entry points. Need a brass adaptor with male threading for a standard faucet and the other end with male threading for a standard garden hose. -

Right. The January temperature figures are an example of a flaw that can occur with the use of (only) the mean average. In this case, one data set are high (temperatures) and the other are low (temperatures), the mean makes it appear like the month was in the middle. -

Some people use a heated length of tubing that trickles water out. Of course, it needs to go in before the ice jam. One thing that does help is to open the area where it drains down into the downspout/leader, at least what later melts can trickle away. I melt the area by pouring warm water until it's open. You need to be able to get to the spot though. I have one spot where I do this on the north side of my home. -

The brutally cold season of 1976-1977 only yielded some 25 inches in the NYC area. (24.5" in CPK.)Yes, the snowfalls lasted. lolHeavy ice formation in the waterways. Area ferry services were suspended. Averages by month, Central Park: October 1976 52.9 F (Number 10 since records kept. Got the "cold" ball rolling.)November 1976 41.7 F (The coldest November since 1917 surely further "primed" the cold waters.)December 1976 - 29.9 F (Number 9 since records kept.)January 1977 - 22.1 F (Number 2 since records kept.)February 1977 - 33.5 F @NorthShoreWx Edited. -
My high school buddy moved to Myrtle Beach to get away from this kind of weather. It was in the 70s there last week though.

Some ice forming in the brackish water at the west end of Raritan Bay, here. A thin layer extending out 100 to 200 yards (and in the boat basin) has formed. Ice can spread rapidly once the freezing point is reached. I'll keep checking. Needs to be a long-term cold spell to get ice to form in the Raritan Bay. I haven't seen extensive ice in a decade, here.
