Thanks! I'm ready for Maine after my last few weeks fishing in Mass are ending better than I could have dreamed of.  Yesterday this one tied the mark of 7lbs 1oz for one of, if not the biggest, to come out the Quabbin. She was long, lean, and just under 25". Ate a heavy football jig in 15'. Thought I was on a rock, so I popped it, and then it took off like a striper. Jumped about 60' out and thought it was a solid 5 pounder. When she got closer to the boat I couldn't believe it. Swam away to drop her eggs later this month.

You're killing it PB, hope the fishing is as good in Maine.

Fans look like they are dressed for winter at Fenway… was shocking to see given how nice it is here.  Folks look as cold as the bats.

Full sunshine, 60s, 18% RH with dews in the teens up here.

Just left Boston, it's raw with a decent wind.

Low 60s with dews in the upper teens, top 10 day with 20% RH.

Great afternoon for a schuss down Mt Mansfield.  Still skiing the trees in spots.  Looks like we have over a week of this.

I've been in Colorado for the week, two days with highs in the 30s with snow and rain one day. Mountains and some of the higher towns got snow weds. Surprised that most ski areas are closed, only found one open.

I shot +3 38 Monday night and left the round feeling like that was the highest score I could have possibly shot. Every hole I seemed to have 1 dumb shot. And it wasn't consistent. Miss the green with a wedge. Miss a 4' putt. Hit drive on next fairway. One of these nights it will all come together (right?).

I usually have one or two nights a year it all comes together, the more you play the better chance you have.

Played our first Tuesday night informal league tonight. I played well through 6 holes. I birdied the 6th to be +2 and then proceeded to finish triple-bogey-triple and shot a 9 over 44. :axe:  I consider myself a bogey golfer, my handicap is 15. If you told me before we started that I would shoot a 44, I would have been fine with that, especially for the first real time out. The way I got there really sucks though. At least I won money.

The final score doesnt always tell the whole story. First week last year I was at 32, 1 over with one par 4 left, ended up with a 41.

  6. I remember when I built my house, oil was 60 cents a gallon for a few years, these price jumps makes me glad I bought a wood stove, I have next two years wood free from trees my brother had cut down. PIA  to buck and split but it keeps the oil man away.

I don’t know how you guys do it. I can’t play below 55F. I’ll see dudes on the course when it’s in the 40s and drizzle wearing winter gear, and I cringe. It doesn’t look enjoyable. Same for the really hot days. Big hairy men smoking cigars sweating on the first tee on 92/77 days.

    I’m a wuss…Golf is a 60-80 degree game for me.

I'm with you but it's a league so I'm obligated, we used to start earlier in the year and a few of us lobbied to move the start week later, we actually tried for 1st week of May, settled last week of April.

Anyone else notice the huge jump today in fuel prices? Heating oil went up 50 cents today to $5.50 a gallon and diesel was selling for over $6 a gallon in Fairfield County today when I was driving through.

Its why I'm still burning my wood I got at $250 a cord.

  9. First time out tonight, didn't have time to hit the range before so started cold. Not a good night to start cold, the course is on top of a hill and it was windy and cold. Drove the ball well but short game isn't there, shot a 47 and was in a sand trap 8 out of 9 holes so overall can't complain. My fingers were numb at the end even with a golf glove on, need to invest in some winter gold gloves.

I keep having this conversation with my wife. If we sold our house tomorrow, we'd probably get a cash offer that would pay off all our debts and give us 20% to put down on next house......but her response is always the same "it took us a year and half to find this house. How long will it take to find the next one/where would we go?"

If you can rent for a while it's not a bad idea and wait to see where house prices are in 2-3 years, this pace can't keep up, I've seen three of these crazy run-ups and they always end the same way, prices go down. WE have pets so finding a rental is a problem, I've met a few people selling that are moving in with their parents and banking the money for now and they're going to wait and see what happens.

Second round done yesterday, another poor score.  Ball striking a bit better.  Still pushing and fading jrons.  My friend says it looks like my hands are too pressed foward.  Could be possible as that should cause a steeper swing.

The most frustrating part were my 30-50yard shots into the green.  I was doing great all last week, and the front 9 yesterday. All of a sudden I kept thinning them and they become a rocket across the green ...Definitely was peeking before striking ball, stupid mental mistake

Keep your head down, you peek you poke

Yeah, it could Be bees I guess. They are like perfectly round and I don’t see evidence of burrow piles or anything. I threw some seed down and tried to take it into the holes, we’ll see what happens.

    I don’t think it’s grubs

Looks like chipmunks, they make small holes like that when they dig.

My musa basjoos are in. Chicago hardy fig and mulberries as well. We’ll see how well they can survive a winter here. The fig and bananas will obviously die back to the ground, but hopefully put up new growth in the spring. We have fewer growing DDs than the typical zone 5 because of the slow spring warming.

I have a mulberry, gets tons of berries every year but I have to beat the birds cause they swallow them up in no time.

Frost on the tent this morning.  Car thermo says 32°

We used to have a winter camp out in Boy Scouts, we went to Treasure Valley in Paxton first week of Feb I think 76 or 77, we didn't have tents we slept in the Adirondack shelters. Good snow pack that year and it got below zero, all we did was sit around the fire all night and cooked our food, no one slept.

Thanks, I guess a better question would be, what can’t I plant? We are doing pots on the deck.

I know probably another 3-4 weeks for tomatoes,

    Cucumbers?

I plant tomatoes, peppers and herbs, going to try cukes this year, I do them in totes on my patio.

The people who want well manicured lawns don’t let their kids on the lawn. The worst.

I used to golf with a guy that wouldn't let anyone walk on his lawn, he was obsessive about his damn lawn.

I was going to try and go the natural route with the kids playing in the yard, but based on what I saw I think I might nuke it.

I lost a third of my yard one year to the little bastages, turkeys ate and dug up my lawn, even had a skunk one night, my dog met him. Had 10 yards of loam trucked in and started over.

Looks like anyone below ~ 700 f  elevation went < 32 last night.   Definitely a drainage factor with that surface high cresting directly overhead/thru the area over night.

Interestingly ..the 850 mb turned continental prior to dawn, and will be above 0 C across the entire area by mid afternoon.   We are not likely to mix the BL to that adiabatic depth, but... 900 is also in the +6 to +4 range ( SW-->NE), over WSW flow and > 70% sun ...  Today should have some bangin' diurnal recovery..  I'm wondering if we may even approach 35 F in some cases.

I'm above 700 and only got down to 34.

My blue spruces came in yesterday. Can anyone explain what is going on here? What are all these yellow things? They look like flowers or something almost, they are on all six trees

I used to get that on mine, had them probably 20 years and a blight or something killed them all. I don't remember them being that color every year though.
