  1. Been lurking this subforum for years but only started posting recently, I always learn a lot from your posts they’re much appreciated especially with these kinds of systems.
  2. I was hoping for at least 12” of snow depth by the end of this which is still possible but looked more likely this time yesterday. But yeah still glad to be getting some snow from this as it was looking like a complete miss south last week, some people it’s just all or nothing.
  3. RGEM has been consistent on the Detroit area getting at least 6”. It does suck to see the 12z NAM basically cut totals in half compared to yesterday’s 12z run. Hoping the bleeding at least stops for now.
  4. If you extrapolate the NAM it’d probably be about an 8-10” snowfall for the Detroit city proper. I’d definitely rather be downriver for this one instead of north.
  5. Definitely around 4” here in Royal Oak, I was only expecting this to be around an inch. Nice bust in the opposite direction.
  6. Still have light snow falling here in Royal Oak, started around 4:30 PM here.
  7. That would make sense, that glacial ridge northwest of you (the Irish Hills) are probably a little snowier than Ann Arbor too for that reason.
  8. Coming down pretty good in Royal Oak, ground has whitened up in the last 20 minutes.
  9. Yeah depending on where you live the bar should be higher or lower, I wouldn’t consider 12” a big dog in the UP or east coast but here in areas outside the snow belts in the great lakes it’s a good benchmark. I wish the DTX office opened sooner because I always wonder what that area got during Detroit’s biggest snowstorms like in April of 1886 and December of 1974.
  10. I consider a “big dog” to be at least 12”. That’s just my definition and I feel like that’s been reported more in areas out near the hills in DTX’s CWFA. Obviously storm track plays a major role too and DTW can end up with more snow than DTX if it takes a more southernly Miller B track.
  11. Being further north helps but a big part of it is also because of the glacial moraine system. Seems like the cutoff for the “big dog” the past few years has been around M-59 and even more so towards I-696 where elevation drops below 700 feet. I always like watching the webcams at Pine Knob, Alpine Valley, and Mt. Holly, have been several times where it’s snowing on their webcams yet it’s rain/sleet or a dry slot at my place in Royal Oak.
  12. The cutoff between 6+ inches of snow and nothing is pretty sharp too.
  13. I believe that, especially since it’s still so early in the season, but it’s not just at DTW, the NWS and surrounding areas in the hills get more snow than Flint Bishop, MBS in Saginaw county, and probably Ann Arbor. It’s honestly what sparked my interest in weather growing up in southeast Michigan.
