  1. This is the longest it's ever taken to get dark.
  2. Bt of 73.8 is the highest I think I've ever seen reported from the ACE spacecraft. I think 2003 was like 50ish. The potential for tonight is some serious once in a lifetime stuff. You wouldn't get a high KP without a negative bz.
  3. I decided to box up a 6x10' section of my garden and heat it to 40 degrees for last winter. Things didn't go so well. Bougainvillea 'Bengal Orange' - dead Red Abyssinian Banana - dead Blue Java Banana - dead Castor Beans - dead Acalypha - dead Thailand giant elephant ear - dead Gardenia - alive, but defoliated by mites Trachelospermum jasminoides - alive and well No idea what happened. I haven't dug them up yet so maybe I'll find underground rodent damage. Misc: hard to believe that if I had covered the windmill palm for that night of -16 two winters ago, it would have sailed through this winter with ease too.
  4. Wow, that is ridiculously gorgeous. Petunia breeding sure has yielded some pretty wild colors and patterns over the last few years.
  5. I’m still mad at the last convective season, but today proves my heart always has room for more anger.
  6. I wonder if the backlight on my original VP2 console will ever burn out? It's been on for like 20 years now.
  7. I feel like every explanation for shadow bands I've read over the last week has only left me progressively more and more confused.
  8. Ugh, the last thing we need are gray squirrels with the attitude problem of the red squirrels. The last few times I tried to scare off a red squirrel, the damn thing got all jumpy and spastic and started coming towards me.
  9. Looks like the gray squirrel tracks that are all over my backyard.
  10. Pretty amazing even down here. The light is so weird at the max.... just feels wrong even though everything looks normal. I regret not having the idea to start a timelapse of the northern sky until now. It was pretty amazing how much darker it looked off to the north and how fast it moved along the horizon.
  11. Solar radiation starting to tank from a high of 835w/m2.
  12. Looks like traffic on 93 has come to a stop between Franconia Notch and Lincoln.
  13. 14 hours in and my house is down to 56 already.
  14. Been in the dark since 4:30. Heard a loud crack, saw the power lines flailing around, then heard the Mmmmmbzzzzt. Pines across from Naswa deployed a large limb to rip the T crossbar thing right off the pole. Just when I thought I was out of the woods.
  15. I can't believe I still have power. I can hear the wind across the lake but not much happening on this side. Had to do a 4am emergency tree and shrub rescue. I was too late to save the lilacs but the crabapple is ok now. My newly planted arborvitae will probably have to be replaced. About 8-9" inches on the grass.
  16. Looks pretty fun on top of Gunstock https://www.gunstock.com/discover/webcams/
  17. Snow. Patchy blowing snow. Visibility one quarter mile or less at times. Additional snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches. Windy with highs in the mid 30s. Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Chance of snow near 100 percent. Hrm, why no wind advisory?
  18. lol 50+mph from the west or north = grid fine 14mph from the east = total grid collapse
  19. Yesterdays fast and bright mega CME arrived even earlier than I guessed it would. Vicious G4 geomagnetic storm now subsiding.
