Wrt Fire Island, and I know that it's not a buoy comparison, but we went to Fire Island the 2nd Friday of July the years 2009-2012 and I measured the water temp at 10 feet offshore and a depth of 6 inches and it was 74° each time

Too high because sensor is in irrigated garden. 81° seems a bit up there, although it feels right.
