OMG, reality is a beeyotch lol. Love the frozen washboard track quote. Way too much of that this year. I feel like most trails in the northeast right now are basically 18" of ice. The west is stealing our snow!!!
Measured 2.5” when I left for skiing this morning. 3” when returned in evening after settling. Probably 3.5” on board before settling. Totals dropped quickly as we drove north towards Killington. Literally only like an inch 20 minutes north of my house. Got lucky for once! .
Killington was fun today. No lines. Lots open but conditions were pretty variable. Some nice packed powder but plenty of good ole eastern ice. Still a great day. .
Stratton was decent today. They reported 6” which looked accurate but it was mixed with sleet and freezing rain. Gondola windows had a nice coating of ice. Surface was nice on the greens and blues. Blacks turned quickly to boiler plate ice. Used the singles lines and only had to wait 1-3 minutes in lift lines. Skied 10am-1pm and got 10K in. Glad I went but craving the soft fully open conditions that we love. .
Yeah, 2" and then sleet will give much more visual appeal. Gotta cover the grass, twigs, leaves, etc. The low excitement level for this storm on the board is keeping my expectations low. So if we get more, I'll be pleasantly surprised!
Will NAM 12K be high fiving NAM 3K tomorrow for being first to see the overly protruding warm nose? I'm guessing yes. Say what you want about the NAM, but ignoring the early NAM runs that bring the warmth further north can be a bad idea. I wouldn't be surprised if sleet mixes in halfway up VT.
I was going to go to Stratton on Saturday, but now I'm thinking Sunday might be better as a decent amount of the snow looks to arrive after lifts close on Sat. Thoughts?
Awesome pic! Love the old chairlift....basically a pole the bottom of a park bench. Still tons of those lifts in the west where they rarely put the bars down in they even exist. We are more safety oriented in the east lol.
18Z NAM torch runs often come true. I’m keeping expectations for much accumulating snow in the Cap District low for now but we’ll definitely watch dem trends. On another note, 70-71 redo in Albany would be welcome and frightening at the same time. Adrenaline might kill me…. but I guess death by snow is the weenie way to go. .
Cutter = Crickets. Pretty quiet in this thread lol. Oh well, things should be looking up soon. My son skied Copper yesterday and had a blast. They finally got enough snow to open about 1/2 the front side. He got to experience the I70 so tragic for the first time. Woot!! .
Looks like us weekend warriors have a choice of Saturday's warmth and rain and Sunday's sheets of ice. Oh well. Might have to skip this weekend on the slopes. Great, now my wife can ask me to do a million of her projects that she musters up!
Over performing here in the Hudson Valley. Got about 1/3” this morning which melted. Steady light snow now with round 2. Good snow growth. Closing in on 3/4” with round 2. Woot!! .
19" at Killington!?!? Weird upslope event. Taconics got more than southern Vermont mountains. Driving to Stratton you could see that accumulations were all over the place. Looks like Killington even opened some natural trails. Powerline and Ridge Run.Nice start for them.
Hit Stratton today. Decent amount of terrain. Several top to bottom runs. Gondola and another lift went on wind hold. Could still get to top. Very windy and cold. Not used to the cold yet lol. Still a fun day but 4 runs was enough for us lol. .
Stratton planning on 12 trails with top to bottom opening on Wednesday. Boom. They have a serious snowmaking system. And their trails are wide so they get those acres open. Damn!!! .
I was wondering if ski areas ever use chair lifts for regular downloading? Killington has the K1 Gondola which makes it easier, especially since it's designed to be ridden with skis off. Picture people downloading on a chairlift while holding their skis. I don't think they would do that. Sound like a clusterfudge.
